Jack, I'm not smokin' you pal, just talking with you. That's what this place is for some good ol' fashioned hangar flying. I hope you don't consider my comments rude. I didn't mean them that way. I do see what you mean. Think about this. Tibbets flew the first B-17 raid over Germany, and no one knew him for that, but everyone knows about his B-29 mission. Then there is Robert Morgan who made the first B-29 raid over Japan, and no one really knows him for that, but know him for his B-17 missions.

Bud Anderson told me, "No one knows who Gabby Gabreski's crew chief was." and it is true.

Felix Schacki... met him with Gabby at the 2001 IPMS Nationals and both gentlemen signed my P-47 Walkaround, as did Frank Klibbe. (Felix was the assistant, Ralph Safford was his primary crew chief)

I knew what ya meant, just had to put that out there. :)

Jack, I'm not bangin' on you... you have an immense respect for the guys who flew these machines which we all love so much, and that comes through in post after post. You have an encyclopedic knowledge of the men and events that took place 60+ years ago, and clearly have a very strong sense of right and wrong, which I sincerely appreciate.

But every time the Yeager thing comes up, invariably his post-Mach 1 personality and demeanor winds up being the standard by which everyone (myself included) judges him throughout his entire life, and despite me not being anything like his biggest fan, I don't think that's entirely fair to the man. Begrudging though it may be, he earned his place in aviation history... the real shame of it is that he's squandered a great deal of the respect accorded him for that feat over the past few decades, but that's secondary to what we're talking about here.

I sincerely appreciate what you contribute around here, and don't want you to think I'm diving in out of the sun to strafe you and bug out... I just wanted to bring a little different perspective to this Mach 1 flight debate.

Cheers,

Lynn

I have hung out with CY when he wasn't in a position of being hounded by people wanting something from him.......autograph, conversation, free model, etc.

He is a very humble and gracious person when it is just you and him hanging out with airplanes. Normal talk and generally just BS.

I can see where you can be a very "public" person and everyone wants something from you.............pisses me off when things get that way also.

Give a man a break sometimes.
