I did try to think of a snappy title for this post, but whatever I came up with could have been misconstrued.
So I'll just post the photos. It's almost enough to make any B-17 restorer weep. :wink:

I'm always interested in seeing photos from Podington and the 92ND.

I'm often there as it is now Santa Pod Raceway, the history of the place and it's people fascinate me.

Hi Mike,

All the photos you posted were indeed taken at Podington.
The first one is part of a series showing the work of the 446th Sub-Depot who were the heavy maintainence unit on the base. The photo's I posted upthread are part of this series, showing the stores side of the 446th's duties.
I'll finish off the rest of the series with those showing their repair work:

Engine shop, one of the Rommney Huts adjacent to the stores buildings:

Machine Shop, alongside the previous building:

General Workshop, either on the Sub-Depot main area, or beside one of the hangars:

Inside one of the T-2 Hangars:

And finally, the Sub-Depot Area today:

WOW thanks guys.

I know these buildings today!

I'll be showing these to the guys at Santa Pod - maybe I can take comparison shots eventualy.

The control tower is now a house but looks the same - I once spoke to the lady who lives there, that's one house I'd love to own!

Also I remember the T2 hangars I've been inside one but they are gone now.

I happened to be surfing the web in search of any info I could find about my dad's WWII service when I stumbled onto this thread. I realize it is quite old but I hope you guys don't mind if I resurrect it for a bit more discussion. My dad was assigned to the 446 Sub Depot at Podington when he arrived in October of 43'. He was an armorer and repaired the electrical systems controlling the chin and ball turrets. I'm fortunate enough to have some photos of him and some of his buddies taken on base but nothing directly involving the shops and store areas of the 446, so this was of particular interest to me. Do any of you guys have, or know where I might go to get additional pics of the 446 Sub Depot operations? I'd be much obliged. Thanks.

I'm going to attempt to upload a few pics from photobucket.......

My Pa is the tall skinny guy leaning on the 50 cal's. Notice the bore sight stuck in the end of the barrel. From the gleam of the aluminum, this plane appears to be near new.

This plane was UX-R from the 327th Bomber Squadron

Again, he's the tall skinny one (6'2'' & 141lbs) at the left. This pic is very grainy but under magnification I believe the sign says ''446 Armament Group''.

A B-17 will be returning to Podinton this coming summer, sadly not landing , the UK's B17 Sally B will performing a flypast on Sun 13th July 2014 at Dragstalgia, a nostalgia dragracing event at what is now Santa Pod raceway.
I will be there working on an old American piston engine, just as I am at the big race meets throughout the year
