It did indeed happen. Some will argue he was not first. If you do, that is your belief and you are entitled to it. It is not mine. Regardless Gen. yeager did break the sound barrier, and I would like to keep this thread in a good tone. Whether you think he was first or not, it took guts to climb into that X-1 and light that candle. When I first asked Gen. Yeager about the flight I asked if he had to pick one word to sum up his flight, what it might be. Without a pause, he stated "Duty". "It was my duty to go out there and do that. That goes for all of the test pilots. It was our duty to go and fly these missions because our country needed us." They did it for not alot of pay but for our country. The tests conducted by these men not only aided military flight, but space flight as well as General Aviation. This goes out for all of the test pilots out there. Thank you.

So that's it huh? We can't even talk about a day in history without bashing someon over our PERSONAL feeling of that pilot. If George Welch did indeed break the sound barrier first, then he should have known about the rules everyone agreed on that it would not be considered a record without the NACA equipment. It's the same as trying to get into the Guiness book without one of their judges, your attempt will not count. If he did it fine, but it doesn't count as a record breaking flight. Doesn't matter how many people "think" they heard it.
