I haven't talked to Spanner or anyone else with the GCW because of the power/communications problems they're having in the Houston/Galveston area, but here is a link from the Gulf Coast Wing website:

If you can't link to it, here is a quick synopsis of Sandy Thompson's (Wing PIO) release--the hangar that TR is housed in sustained fairly minimal damage from the hurricane and the airplane, parts, and equipment all appear to have little or no damage. Sandy also expressed thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers for all the people affected by Ike.

As of 1145 Tuesday, Sept. 16th the hangar is without power.
It probably will be for a few more days as the power poles look like broken toothpicks.

The bomber made it through the hurricane fine. We did lose a chunk of siding off the top of the hangar.

Even though Ike has disrupted everyone's life down in the south of Texas, there is still stuff going on with TR. Spanner gave me a homework project to deal with a while back and I thought I'd better post this to show him I'm still working on it.

The homework is a part of the induction system that needed some structural repairs and a general rebuilding.

Midland was great... I got to crawl through Sentimental Journey (and yes, I took a pic of the top turret mounting sheetmetal.)
I liked the Arizona folks as much as I liked the plane and that is saying something.

Thunderbird was parked on the other side of the B24 (you know the one... that OTHER flying B24 ))) from SJ and it made for quite a line-up.

The report back from Bud is that most of the GCW people who showed up Saturday were still in shock. I know I was sort of MORE useless than ever when I got to Airsho.

Sorry no pics this go around, but I will see what I can come up with soon.

Does this little motor look familiar?



I stumbled upon this little jewel recently and paid the princely sum of ten dollars for it. I haven't tried to put power to it yet, but it looks like it will function judging from the external condition. I'll be able to completely rig the airbox doors if all goes according to plan now.

So, did you enjoy flapping around the sky in our last volunteer/helper project?

Now that you are mostly done in the left wing you will appreciate that I spent the day pressure washing it with the scrubbing bubbles foam.
It is ALMOST clean.
The compression Strut Channel is ALMOST IN.
I am totally exhausted.

I wish I had great news about the hangar, but for right now it looks like they are going to suffer us for two more months while we get some major parts back on for the move.

As for my ride in Ol' 927 I told 'em as I was getting out... NAH, it was too noisy and it smelled funny!

The airbox is nearly complete. I still have to rebuild the fresh air door, install the seals on all the doors, rig the linkage, and tighten everything up before we stuff it in that clean wing you've prepared.

This is a homework update directed at Spanner and the GCW maintenance team. Sorry to bore the rest of you, but I wanted to let the crew know the airbox is done.

The finished product, ready for installation:


This shot shows the fresh air door in the "filtered air" position and I'm holding open the spring-loaded backfire relief valve.


We'll bring the box along next weekend for installation.

Do the rest of you WIXers want further updates while we're in Houston?

Just got a call from David Carr, our Maintenance Officer and he says...
drum roll please...
#4 fuel tank has 110 gallons of 100 LL in it and it isn't leaking!

We are going to let it sit there until Sat. and then test the transfer pumps to the other tanks on the right wing and then try out the left wing bladders.

The SMOKING LAMP IS OFF!!!

AND... Scott... that is a work of warbird ART! Thanks and we will definitely celebrate at Kathy's Country Kitchen on me when you get here!
