There's also two down in Seymour, Indiana. I've got some pics of them around here somewhere. If I recall, they are built from scratch airplanes.

Just to clarify, the aircraft in the videos are exact replicas of the Gee Bee R-1 and Boeing P-26 Peashooter being built from plans by volunteers at the San Diego Aerospace Museum...pretty intimidating projects, but it looks like they're coming along pretty nicely...upon further research, the Gee Bee was apparently completed [url] http://www.aerospacemuseum.org/exhibits/geebee.html

The latest issue of Classic Wings had a fairly extensive (as usual!) article on P-26 survivors and replicas under construction.

In the article, the guy building the two someday flyers in Indiana didn't speak too highly of the Mayocraft example...

That GeeBee looks pretty neat! I know nothing about the airplane, are there any flying, or will I ever see one fly?

I'm curious why they would be building these aircraft. Is there any historical connection between these aircraft and San Diego? Where does this fit in with their charter and what made them decide to build a P-26 rather than something else?

I think a scant few original parts have been incorporated into the P-26 restoration, IIRC the wheels.

Now if they could just get an original data plate.

Thanks for all the replies. From what I gathered from the videos, the San Diego Aerospace Museum had a significant gap in its collection with no aircraft from the 1920's. Through donations/volunteer work, they commenced the 2 scratch-build projects. The plans for the Gee Bee came from the New England Air Museum, and the plans for the P-26 came from Boeing. Neither will fly, but both are supposedly built/being built to "factory" specification.
