Can there be a partial truth here? Did Fat Man fit all the way inside the bomb bay with the doors closed? I know the RAF Lancs carried bombs too big to fit inside. Were the bombs shipped over in a container? Maybe he saw the box with the bomb inside. I doubt if the bomb was left uncovered.
Maybe he saw what he saw, so his side of the story is not false, but not the whole explanation. Seems strange that this never came out before. I met Bob Caron, tail gunner on Enola Gay and CAF member from Denver. He wrote a book about the bomb mission, FIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS, worth reading. Nice guy, no hero complex.

another historical hysterical example of ww 2 revisionism to suit the wacky lefties. i'm no archie bunker..... but don't insult my intelligence & waste people's time spewing this kind of b.s. for god's sake...... do you think all the ww 2 film footage of the death camps, a- bomb footage etc is faked?? who ever circulates this stuff shakes my confidence with their mental capacity.

How is this revisionism for "the lefties?" I think this is a load of crap, especially because there's a whole lot of evidence that the Enola Gay was the aircraft that carried the weapon that day. Any historian will tell you that an anecdote is nothing in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Edit: Wow, old bump.

Well anyone can make any statements without facts, but staying on the topic of this story, it has so many holes it would make a swiss cheese blush. That the government could develop planes larger than the B-29 for a special purpose, then quietly make the planes and all traces of their development disappear.... I have this swamp land, err...I mean beautiful waterfront property I could sell you in Florida.

EVERYONE knows the actual truth is this- The United States, afraid to lose any more airmen, made a deal with the SECRET government of Japan, in which the REAL atomic bombs, which were much too large to fit into an aircraft, were transported by the SS Lurline(painted to look like a neutral Swiss ship) to the docks in Tokyo. From there, they were transported to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where they were detonated by remote control from an aircraft. The SECRET Japanese government agreed to this because they knew they were well beaten, but the OFFICIAL Japanese government and people would never accept this without a strong show of some type of insurmountable force. Since we were working on the atomic bomb(a well known secret at the time) we volunteered to supply it during secret negotiations, if they would place it, and our aircraft would detonante it. A specially rebuilt Mustang(only fighter with the range) had cosmetic panels attached to resemble a B-29 at high altitude, and was flown over each city, and remotely triggered the explosions. Part of the casing of the real bombs were rocket packs, which, when triggered, would launch it to a low altitude prior to detonation- thus simulating a true air burst.

The pilot who flew these missions was Chuck Yeager, with Douglass Bader(released from Colditz by this point, and on special assignment from RAF) as the back-up pilot.

Leonard Nimoy, then an ECM specialist with the Navy, observed the results by emmission detection equipment. Interestingly enough, at the time he was assigned to the USS Curmudgeon(DD 102.5) not the Enterprise as may be inferred.

Here's how it happened. The bomb was slung between 2 b-29's. Half way there the bomb fell into the ocean, went off and spawned godzilla who then attacked hiroshima. Pow raymond burr was there to document the attack. Burr was told he was in tokyo.

Tiger Force was a large chunk of Bomber Command that was offered to help with the war in the Far East, and in 1945 involved something like 20 squadrons.

So the "White aircraft" could have been like that one. Don't forget all the RAF's first nuclear bombers were anti-flash white in colour.

Oh and it's too convenient that Leonard Cheshire VC was in the area after all his time with that special mission Lancaster lot:- 617 squadron, the "Dambusters".

Conspiracy theory? I'm in....

On a serious note, this story is EXACTLY why stories from WWII veterans shouldn't automatically be taken at face value. It's not a matter of disrespect- I'd say every single one of us has the utmost respect for what these men accomplished, and their service to their countries- rather, it's simply a case of 65-70 year old memories not being as sharp as they once were.

Don't get me wrong, there is enormous value in speaking with these men, especially when you get the opportunity to thank them for their service... just don't automatically assume everything they tell you about specific operations, bomb loads, aircraft markings, etc are absolutely 100% historically accurate. :)

Now, let's see someone do a "what if" 617 Sqn Lanc with a "Fat Man" bomb slung underneath... ;)
