Another one for modellers to copy as evidence for your next contest HELLCAT, the color variations all over the airframe, they may have all been painted in the same place at the same time. but tinting variations in cans of paint shows up really well here!

Look @ a factory fresh B-17. the tail grouping and wing outer panels were different shades because they were painted by the subcontractors with 'as supplied' paint that was mixed to 'govt specs'

Thanks Jack-

Unfortunately, the current vouge among modellers is to overemphasize different shaded panels, and highlight and outline ever single panel line. I've seen lots of very nicely and artistically done models, that look nothing like a real airplane.

I always cringe when I see a model of a carrier-based aircraft with "weathering" consisting of heavy paint chipping. In the real world, chips were immediately touched up..bare aluminum is the last thing you want exposed to salt spray!

At a model club meeting once a couple of the guys were arguing over whether late-war Avengers should be flat or gloss blue. One of our old vets who'd actually worked on them rolled his eyes and said "No matter how they started out, after we washed 'em down a few times with a mixture of gasoline and hydraulic fluid they all ended up kinda semi-gloss." 8)

Excellent Quote!
That is why I stopped being in model clubs.
Someone always has to point out inaccuracies, that really have no clue.
Often the same person has not built a model in years, but is a self proclaimed expert.

Nice to hear facts from the horses mouth. 8)

Great Pic, Jack!
