Man they NEED to bring the P-39 back to Houston. Its one plane that I should petition to get back as well as well NM guess the P-40 is down? Heh ok next year forget the Blues, just go with an all warbird show!

Have any of you guys heard from Tim Landers? He invited me to come back down and help out with the Legends tent again, but I can't get in touch with him via email, PM, or phone for several weeks now...

Thanks for your vote, Nathan! We'd love to see the 39 at Houston as well. We cut the appearance fee to just $2000 plus 200 gallons of 100LL. Maybe you can find us a sponsor? That is if they have ramp space for it at Houston. I was willing to bring the U-11 in on my own fuel, but I was told there wasn't ramp space available (we're talking light twin here). So, there might not even be ramp space for the 39 if we did find an angel. Is the WOH show being squeezed out of existance? I know the San Marcos show has probably gone that way as the city decided to let hangars be built in the area that we used for car parking.

No squee down here. The ramp hasn't gotten any smaller. If anything they are giving less product for more money. Even the freebie statics that come in are getting thinner.

Some of you might wonder why aircraft charge a fee to go to a show. We'd love to fly all the shows we can, and at no cost, but then the plane wouldn't be flying for long. CAF HQ figures that $450/hour needs to go into the engine overhaul fund. Then there's usual maintanance, plus the annual administrative fee that is paid to CAF HQ, and insurance. Nobody, whether it be a CAF plane, another group, or an individual, gets rich with these warbirds. A very few might break even, if they are lucky.

Rick,

The freebie statics are getting thinner because they are being turned away and told there isn't room on the ramp for them! I was willing, both last year and this, to bring the U-11A to WOH and even fly the show on my own fuel. This is the reply I received from Scott Rodkey:

"Thank you for your inquiry regarding Wings Over Houston. We sincerely regret that ongoing ramp space issues coupled with historically high fuel prices force us to limit our invitations.

We appreciate your interest and hope you can understand our situation.

-Scott"

I would like to see the show go back to its roots as in the first couple of years. It was a good turnout of Warbirds. Also the military stuff seems to be down for the past few years from conflicts in the big sand box. But nothing beats the good ol days of Harlingen!! :(

Pretty soon I think the Warbird show will just consist of the TORA/LSFM act.

I'm happy to announce that we have heard from Scott Rodkey and the P-39 Airacobra is now scheduled to be at WOH 2008! In addition, the CenTex Wing will also be bringing three member owned aircraft (two T-6's, "Red Tail" and "Triple Nickel") and the U-11A!!!

See you there!

Good to hear Mike!

Fri Sep 26, 2008 3:01 pm

DZ, will you be at WOH?

Also, did you hear that a show is being planned in Conroe next spring to benefit Lone Star?

Fri Sep 26, 2008 7:06 pm

No, too far. I just did the Scott AFB airshow in St Louis last weekend. Only three static airplanes, an SNB, a Fouga, and me for warbirds. But there was a brand new CV-22 tiltrotor,,I want one of those when the USAF gets done with them!

WOH don't pay enough, and can't get by with just gas anymore.

The U-11 is going to Houston!!!! Why oh why are you going over to the dark side cuz?

Fri Sep 26, 2008 11:25 pm

There are also some L-bird pilots scheduled to come to the event... At least one real one from WWII and a modern one. :D Don't know yet if I'm bringing a bird or not. It may be easier for me to take a ground vehicle because of some scheduling issues.
Anyone know if any of the Lewis birds will be there?

DZ, you are right about WOH not paying enough. I'm invited, but on my own fuel.

Hey Cuz, why go over to the dark side? Just for fun!!! I still remember the good old days when WOH HQ was the Hobby Hilton, and you singing "I've got friends in low places"! Them was the days!

We've got media day tomorrow. Not sure if we'll be flying the Huey or if we'll just be static, either way there's a free lunch involved ! :D
