MX 304, Is a Tigercat really two seats? As I said, I have never sat in one or even had a ladder to look in the cockpit, but I have never seen more than one person in one that I know of. And the same other question, do they have any real historical value, perhaps in Korea?
As for speed it went 367 in the race, not bad, but not really fast. Howard's stock Bearcat was 402, and his Fury, stock except for engine was 414. Strega was 117 mph faster than it and only needed one MERLIN, not two big radials.
I don't know if it was a bomber or supposed to be fighter, or what. In general twin engine fighters were not superior to single engine ones, as in the Me110. As a multi purpose plane like a Mosquito they had success, especially as nightfighters.

They served as night fighters in Korea. I believe they had a few kills (probably Yaks).

The 2nd seat is in a fuselage cavity over the wing. Usually had a fuel tank and radio gear but easily set up for a rider. There is structure between you and the pilot so you have a great view to the sides and up.

...and if I'm not mistaken, night fighter versions in the Korean War had the radar operator sitting in back.

And don't forget the significant historical value they had after the war as very powerful and successful fire bombers with Sis-Q Flying Service and other outfits.

You were at Reno weren't you Bill? I didn't need a ladder or sit in one either.

From the grandstands clearly shows the second seat area, no extra charge to sit in general grandstands.

This one, just cause the plane looks and sounds so darn cool:

Calling the area where the passenger sits a "seat" is a bit of a stretch. It's a piece of flat plywood with a chute/cushion & your feet are at the same level as your butt so it's similar to sitting on the ground.... except your butt is sepatrated from the fuel tank by the thickness of the plywood/cushion....

Roger, I was at Reno, I just spent most of my time in the pits visiting and not in the grandstand. And if I went to an auto show, my attention would be more focused on a Ferrari or Jag than the monster trucks, so I didn't spend much time down at the east end or up to the Tigercat. Your photo shows a rear window and I have stood next to one as well as flown near one at Oshkosh and as I wrote I have never seen more than one person in it. Your photo shows the space inside the window, but doesn't show a person or a seat. There's a space behind the pilot of a single seat Spitfire and a window, but no room for a seat. I was at Reno for the qualifying but did not stay for the race weekend so I didn't see them fly. Looks is a matter of taste, but to me the tail is way too big, the fuselage is vertical and the engines round, just looks out of sync. The days early in the week were good, besides being free, it was low key and there was lots of time to talk to people I had not seen in year. I would have like to have seen Tiger win another one on Sunday as well as Howard and Nelson do well. Dan Martin was the guy who gave me my first Mustang ride, and it was good to see him up there also ahead of them oil slinging misfiring giant versions on T-28 engines.
Seriously,I enjoyed the nice weather, something I have not seen before there, and was glad that the rest of the week was safe after the carnage last year and the tragedy on Saturday.

There was a significant number of F7F's built with a second seat for a radar operator.

Heres a picture Mark Watt took on the way home to Ione after Reno with a backseater.

Dan, you've got a point. But Jan never had the word "MARINES" painted on her side. That must be it!
As for as the 2nd person, well I learned something new again WIX. And it looks better to me in the photos in flight or from the front than sitting on the gear from the side.

What makes me upset is that 2 out of 3 of those rear seats wernt filled in the three ship formation flight!

You'd think they try and raffle off those positions. Boy i know i would enjoy being in the rumble seat of one of those!

Ok so i know the one with the 4 on the cowlings. (the preivous TFC example) and i know Big Bossman ( Former LSFM, still based at PSAM?) but what of the third one? Is thsi one based out of Chino? :?
