I'm assuming the story is being perpetuated by the same fellow who told the audience at OSH '95 that the Saturday formation of 180-some warbirds was the largest since WWII!

Perhaps so, but they advertised it as such, and the airshow announcer said it also. It was large, though! Definitely the largest formation I'd ever seen since I had been going to airshows since the early 70's, including Airsho' and Oshkosh. It may not have been the biggest ever, but it was still very enjoyable.
Anyways, it was VERY cool and one of those moments I'll never forget!
