Is this just three M1 Bazookas (minus the wooden handles) spliced together or is this the rocket mod I have seen on CBI mustangs and 56th FG P-47s?

Taylor - ask Jim Gray. I know we discussed those very photos when he was here in San Antonio. They're from Iwo Jima and are of an OY-1 from VMO-5 I think... Would you be changing the paint scheme as well, so as to stay authentic? Also, I think that there was another photo or two in that series that showed the radio installation on one of the Iwo birds.

Also, I think that it's the same aircraft depicted (obviously not 100% accurately) in the extremely rare Sword 1/72 kit (I so want one but don't want to pay the $30+ it usually goes for on Ebay - which is why I had the model on my site designed) - seen here:

Yeah, I'll ask Jim. I have a third R/H cowl panel that I could do that a/c's nose art on, but I think they'd just be cool to have!

BTW the radio mod youre talking about is a non-G-model ambulance BC-659 Jeep Radio installation. In the late G-Model L-5 there were mounting rails in the litter bay for this radio so the observer could talk to the troops on the ground (see below pic of my BC-659 mounting rails). Also, the set has about a 12' long antenna that sticks out of the a/c. On the G's there is a hole cut in one of the greenhouse glass panels. In the early a/c these radios were fieldmod.-ed and looks to me like they just poked a hole thru the fabric for the antenna. My L-5G will have this radio set and antenna in it. It'll look cool but it's heavy as h**l!

Any chance you could find a subtle way to make it to where you can do a "quick removal" of either the radio or the guts? Say for instance you wanted to take a full load of gas and a heavy passenger... ?

They were made to come out fairly easily. The antenna is telescopic (sp?) so it minimizes to about 15'' and the unit itself has 4 tension synced that hook to the little protrusions on the mounting rail as barely seen in the photo of my rails. I would NEVER fly with it and my other radios in the a/c. That's gotta be 150-200lbs extra. It'll be in it when being judged.

If that's Iwo it must of been cold. They all have their sleves down, jackets zipped up, colars flipped up and hands in their pockets. Maybe Europe.

Only have one worry ...when you fire these things will you be prepared for the plane going backwards?

No recoil from a bazooka, so no loss of aispeed.

Valiant Air Command in Tico, FL had an L-4 with this mod in their hangar some years ago. "Bazooka Joe", IIRC.

Hook up compress air to that and you can shoot out tee-shirts at air shows like they do at sporting events.
