Words fail me. I just hope all you guys and your friends and families are safe. Anything else can be rebuilt with time. The scale of the devastation boggles me. Take care.

So is there going to be an effort to get things cleaned up fast at the museum? I ask this because the personal clean up is beyond what I can think of but I might be able to help if the help would be needed / wanted or even helpful.

I've done some corrosion control in the Navy on Hornets and I can mop and shine bright work like nobodies business (Man, I need to put that on my resume and see the looks I get).

Trea, feel free to contact me about this.

Tim

There is no infrastructure on the Island, ie, no electricity, water, passable streets, etc.
If those static airplanes don't get a fresh water wash, and corrosion control treatment (ACF-50, Corrosion X) soon, the aluminum will be beyond repair. Every aircraft in the hangars are affected by this.
The problem is the authorities will not allow anyone in the area, including residents.

Galveston County Judge James Yarbrough says a tiger has been on the loose since Hurricane Ike tore through the coastal community of Crystal Beach, Texas.

"It's an issue we are dealing with," he tells reporters. "When you think you've seen everything you find something else."

Yarbrough wouldn't describe the tiger as tame, but he says the animal is well-known to the local community.

Update at 2:06 p.m. ET: The Associated Press says the animal escaped from a sanctuary for exotic pets.

"I understand he's hungry ... so we're staying away from him," Yarbrough says.

Kenlyco, between the alligators and Texas rednecks the tiger is probably in the food chain or decorating a rusty truck hood by now.

Trae, what about posting the link from the lsfm e-group. Idon't do well with photobucket.

We all know all too well the effects of salt water on alum. It kills me to say it but the doomsayers are most likely right.
The damage to Galveston as a whole is utterly catastrophic and with the totally trashed infrastructure and the needs of human beings involved, sadly museum artifacts are way the heck down in priority right now. I doubt that volunteers will be allowed in any time soon. People who work there are iffy if not in an essential occupation.
We thought the buildings could take a hurricane but the a storm surge like this hasn't been seen on the gulf coast since the 1900 storm.
It is encouraging to hear all the support from other warbirders. I personally thank you.

Doug Ratchford, Canso42

Hey Trae (and anyone else at LSFM of course) -

It absolutely breaks my heart to see these pictures and to hear about the condition of the museum. I can't tell you how much you, and LSFM, had to do with fueling my love of warbirds. The people down there were amazing and the museum too. I just can't believe the devastation.

I am sure it is a ways off but please, please, keep us posted about clean-up efforts, etc., at the museum. If there is a big push on a weekend or something like that. Or even if you know in advance when you might be spending two or three days down there - let me know. I will do anything in my powers to get Chris and I down there to help out. (And if he's not available, I am!) Honestly. Just please keep me posted. You have my e-mail.

You are in my thoughts, as well as all of the wonderful people I met in Texas. If I can do anything to help, please let me know.

Sending all my best.

Thanks Steph!
Im glad you were able to come down and spend some time with us and with the museum!

When the time comes to be able to start the clean up and we know more I will inform everyone. Thanks to everyone for their concern with the museum and its volunteers!

Tim,
Thanks for the support and the offer! I will stay in touch.

I figured this might be pertinent, it's pictures taken by members of the Galveston Railroad Museum, but includes pictures of LSFM and the larger airport - http://www.galvestonrrmuseum.com/grrm_081.htm

One thing that surprised me is that they didn't have the "RailWhale" 80,000 gallon tank car chained to its trucks and so it's been floated over 100 yards away against a warehouse. All of the other equipment appears to have been chained to the trucks as is more customary for railcars.

For the near future it appears that LSFM isn't going to be able to host/store/hangar their flyable fleet. Does anyone know what the plans are for those aircraft? Is there any way that some of us with a little hangar space can help, especially during the winter season?

Kevin as far as I know all of the aircraft that were flown out prior to the storm have places for now. If there becomes a time where the museum is asking for assistance in hangar space, I will pass the messege on.

To give you a idea of what faces LSFM Our sister H-E-B Store on Galveston Has well over 12 inches of Sand on the Show floor. This was from the surge tides A Semitrailer that was setting in the Back of the store was almost bent in half for Surge Water.
H-E-B is about 2 miles east of the Air field . Hopefully by the end of the week they will be able to start setting Dry and Caned goods. I understand that Kroger's is open today with limited items .
