Look at his face. I think he can wear whatever he wants!
Maybe from a previous squadron tour?
Well I find that interesting - especially since the 34th AS and the 95th AS (later BS's) were both part of the 17th BG (from which most of the Doolittle Raiders hailed). I'd be a little ticked if my squadron commander was still wearing the other (friendly rivalry) squadron's patch!
On the other hand, the 34th apparently has a tradition in modern times that might be kind of similar. About two or three years ago I was at an airshow wearing my 34th BS uniform that my sisters scrounged up, and this AF flight crew guy comes up just raving about the 34th Bomb Squadron patch and WW2 style uniform. Turns out he was a former 34th BS member. Said that once a 34th - ALWAYS a 34th member. And then he ripped off his current squadron patch (on Velcro) to see a hidden miniature, but VERY recognizable 34th BS patch that was neatly placed in the middle of the Velcro! That was very cool and I wish that someday I could find one of those!
