Curiosity question:
Why weren't the radiator pods polished? Same for the wheels?
Simply maintenance reduction or poor metal for polishing?
Just curious........

Vlado, I asked the same question about the radiator fairings in the other thread! :D I had never really noticed it on other P-38s but the polishing the aircraft really made these stand out. I thought from the pics on Nelsons's site that they almost looked like fiberglass since they had been painted. :oops: Steve at Ezells was relaying that they were made from steel due to the temperature extremes they had to endure and they were painted a matching color. Not sure if it was overkill on Lockheeds part or what, but I don't think there is a lot of steel in the mustang radiator housing assembly, cover, or any of the surrounding structure. I may be wrong on this....I know there are those out there, probably you included, that have been deep into the Stang radiator and can speak from experience. Anybody?

The Scoops and Fairings are made from steel and don't polish so paint is the only way to go. Also keeps the corrosion down in those areas! Beautiful job by Nelson and Crew!!

Zane,

Don't know if you were still in Addison at about 5:00pm, but Mr. Shaw took her up for another flight, and when he returned to Addison, he did a couple of low passes down the runway. Looked and sounded awesome.

Practically everything around the Mustang radiator is aluminum. There are 4 steel structural attach straps that hold the radiator to the aluminum mounting casting, all the rest, including the radiator itself, is aluminum. Apparently a major technical break through was the development of aluminum tubing on the main coolant radiator. I believe it was Trane that developed the aluminum tubing for aircraft radiators?
Curious if the P-38 coolant radiators were aluminum also.
The oil coolers on all WW2 aircraft, I believe, were copper tubing and brass.

Vlado, check out the pics at http://www.ezellaviation.com/Past%20Pages/P38/radiator.html The radiators were made by Winchester Cartridge Co. Radiator Division so I'd imagine they were copper or brass.... See what you think.... Also the pics of the fairings are there that I was talking about.

When I worked on LSFM's P-38, the four radiators are brass. They are constructed much like an oil cooler on any other warbird.

Made it over on SUN as well. Polish is really amazing!

Ztex... looks like your shot came out better than mine! The three of us didnt move close enough to the nose!

Is the RedBull P-38 still at Cavanaugh or has it left already and if so what is the next stop. If it is still there I would like to get out there tomorrow before I open the shop.
