I have to agree with Bill on this one. I don't think he mean't anything derogatory. .... none of us here do. Just fly safe and win.

I'm have a late breakfast at my hotel with a friend (slept in ... ) and then we are going to drive over to Reno-Stead, if you see a guy with a NY Yankees cap on with a very blonde blonde walking in the pit area, come over and say hello.

BTW .... watching the USC / OSU football game tomorrow night at the casino? 5pm PST

Mark

Is Gary racing this year in the "WIX special"??

Just wondering, I have not seen any posts on how he is doing.

Mark,

Dad is leaving in the morning - so no more NY Yankees Cap - and we traded it in for Czech Mate, Strega and Warlock versions.

After all the bad press we've gotten for the last two years and the closeness I have felt to these losses - I wanted to set the record straight.

The Blonde Blonde

No, sadly his machine was found to not be "right" while still on the ground.

Gary is here, helping the entire F1 Class.

And he has a pretty gal pal with him also.

The Bomber Fleet is up here, we made 2 passes today at the track after the races for a missing man formation for a racer that past away recently, for his family and friends who gathered there.
We have 2 B-25's and a B-17 here in town.

As for setting the record straight, I didn't know the numbers on fatalities at Reno, but if we use the figures given by "Dasher"; that is is 19 fatalities over 45 years, the result is an average of one death every 2 1/3 years.

If the numbers are accurate then those are the facts. Anyone can give their own interpretation, either that it's only a few people so shouldn't concern us, or that it is dangerous. But that's the record, without any slant. Nothing I have written was about not having the races. I'd like to fly in it if I had the right plane. But I think crowd safety should be improved. The faster planes, especially the jets at 500 mph are in an steep bank with probably 5 gs as they come out of the turn in front of the pits. If there is a mid air or other loss of control they could go into the crowd. I'm told that almost happened last year. Unlike auto racing, there is no barrier between the course and the public and the planes are moving 2 or 3 times faster than any car. Nascar or Indy has big fences to contain any wreckage. Ski racers go up to 90 mph, but there is double fencing between them and the public on the turns. And a skier isn't carrying hundreds of gallons of flammable fuel. An idea might be to alter that one pylon so the planes turn before the straight. And perhaps a low concrete barrier in front of the crowd.

I hope these last two days have safe racing and Merlins return to the winners spot.

As for Gary Austin not racing in his F1 machine, we talked to him about it. When he was doing a control check of the ailerons he found play in the system. He discovered the glue joints in the wing were loose and allowing movement. The big point was he could not see it even by close visual inspection, the glue looked fine until there was pressure. Apparently a previous impact had stressed and crystallized the contact area in the glue. Gary said the wings probably would have broken if he had flown the plane, so even though he missed the race it was great to find it, and it says something for his care.
