Reno Qualifiying Speeds

Wed Sep 10, 2008 7:37 pm

It' s wed eve after another nice vfr day at Reno. No accidents! One mayday due to an engne failure in formula one, he made the runway ok. Here are the approximate speeds I remember so far for unlimted qualifying. Dago Red, Dan Martin, 474 mph. Sept Fury, Mike Brown 473mph. Strega, Tiger Destafanie, 471 mph. Rare Bear 468 mph. Nelson in theFury at 421? and Howard in the Bearcat at 417 mph. I don't have any other speeds or classes. I have seen and talked to dozens of warbird and race guys, been hanging out with Brad Pilgrim, Bud Granley and the Harvard guys from up north.

What impressed me was NEMESIS........ 409 MPH Qualifying..............

I think it would be about 7th or so in the UNLIMITEDS if they let it race with them. Its not even sporting to have it in the Sport Class.

Have a Beer with Bud and Brad for me, and tell them I say Hi.

How about you get a couple of photos of Brad and his fiance to post.

We arrive Friday night late - maybe we'll see you on the field somewhere, Bill

I am back in Aspen now, it is rainy and cool, quite a change from Reno. I don't have any results for today as I left the hotel at noon. I saw Mike George and family come in as I was leaving. Myabe they or Brad will post photos or results. My camera was not up to the task the day I tried to get some photos.

Dago Red really set the bar during quals.....(I am having to keep track from home base this year). John in Rare Bear Colorado based) is right up with the pack.

In the T6 Class two Colorado pilots and planes, John Zayac at 238 mph, and Gary Miller at 219 mph.....not a bad showing.

They have a live audio feed off the Reno site.

Did Furias and Impatiant virgin make it? I saw Furias getting towed and the virgin leave the other day.

Bill,

In 45 years of racing at Reno we have had 19 fatalities.
I don't believe this warrants a "woohoo, no accidents today!" post.

Thank you.

I don't think he meant it like finally no accidents, as if were a daily occurrence.

Impatient Virgin is here - in Heritage.

Happy Jack is also there.

Furias is a no show - which is what we heard about a month ago.

Thanks. The Virgin left with Mr. Boman's O-2 I think they did some air to air pictures, because the O-2 returned 30-40 min later.

"Dasher"?, you have a right to your opinion, hollow though it may be. To me it would have a lot more validity if you weren't hiding behind an alias, included even keeping your location a secret as well as your name.

And when you say "we", at Reno, are you a racer or a builder, or crew or other expert? Maybe you have gotten jaded to the losses.

Next, if you want to attack what I wrote, you could quote me honestly and accurately, if you are that kind of guy. I'll bet you $100 I never wrote, "whohoo" no accidents today.

Bill,

Half the people at Reno know me as Dasher.

Biplane Race #4.
Veteran Air Racer

Ask your friends Tom and Tiger.

And I knew Erica - well.

Dasher is a she, and a racer too.

The funny thing is, if you two met on the ramp you'd get along fine.

Marilyn, that was a bit quick on the draw...

Anyway, nothing to see here, move along now!

Dasher, or perhaps Ms. Dasher, safety and the risks we face in aviation and especially sport aviation is so much on my mind.

So in covering this event the possibility of an accident is up there, especially after last year and Sat.
