....and so she sits, in the museum, after her little prang on the M11, because some guy (I won't mention a name) thought he could bring her down without flaps (if memory serves) and instead put her down on the other side of the highway......

Only time I saw her was years later in some restoration shop on the Duxford field in pieces and parts....would'nt a known it was her except someone TOLD me what it was......

And now she lives out the rest of her life on static display in Hendon.....incredibly sad...

The flaps look down to me , ive tried looking for the crash report but cant find it .

I believe it was more of an issue of trying to land a little hot & a little to far down the runway.

Mmmmm...memory's not as sharp as it was regarding the details 10 years ago....just heard he made a bad choice in trying to set it down and should have gone around...was'nt it overheating or something at the time and that's why he plopped it down on the M11?

Wasn't there some issue with an error involving cooling flaps not set or something like that?

IIRC they thought it was overheating due to a vapor trail. The radiator cooling flap rotary selector wasn't in the auto detent position and glycol was venting overboard. (It's all in the accident report)

He wanted to save the engine, which made for the hot & short landing.

Depends on your glass half empty or half full.

It was always a museum aircraft, destined for a static life. Thanks to incredible efforts and persistence by Russ Snadden and his team, we at least got a few years flight out of a very original Messerschmitt.

If you haven't read Russ' book, you should. It shows what can be done, and how bloody mided officialdom can be (and still be defeated...)

The good old days eh, notice today that for some odd reason none of the flying 109's use the cranked inertia starter but strangely use the electric bomber starter, this has never made any sense to me as it is incorrect and cranking the 109 is half of the fun. Any more photos of the 410 James?
