Chilliwack Flight Fest 08 (Photos)

So I thought I'd do a little bit of shameless advertising for the Canadian Museum of Flight. The organization I've been involved with since I was 10 years old... 16 years ago.

These pictures are from the 2008 Chilliwack Flight Fest which was on Sunday August 17th. It's a small community fly-in with aerobatics and a small vintage/warbird presence. Usually there's also some aircraft from the Canadian Armed Forces on the field; like last year with a Griffin helo, Harvard II, and Seaking. The weather was fairly good, but it did rain a little bit. The cloud cover did make it easier to look up without seeing spots for the rest of the day, though.

Below are pictures of most of the airplanes that were involved in the show. As it turns out, the 2/3 scale Mustang replica is the neweset addition to the CMF collection. It doesn't look exactly like the original, but it really sounds and flies like one. At the airshow is when I learned about the acquisition.

So far that's all the airplanes our museum is able to fly, but we have a Fleet Finch, Fairchild Cornell, Fleet Canuck, and Waco INF to get in the air soon. After that we've got some more, but they're a long ways down the road.

Thanks for posting DM, it's nice to see that small, local fly-ins still survive and not every one is on a huge scale and over organized.

In the first shot of the scale mustang (shetland?) what is the white with red bolt home made spitfire looking aircraft behind it? and secondly, does the MoT really allow the operators of GAXO operate with that 'hold muh beer and watch this' tailwheel steering lashup? Looks like they consulted some engineers @ YUGO on design of that beauty.

The old looking stuff is the standard Cessna Birddog tailwheel configuration, from looking at another Birddog. The nice shiny new bit I can't comment on - doesn't seem to have a release cable or anything, so maybe it's not fully installed yet?

You can see the lug release cable running up the left side of the tailwheel spring, a single, bare steel 1/8th. in. probably 5X7 with 1 NICO half heartedly swaged onto it and the bare cable, with no thimble , running around the release arm pin, see previous reference to engineering @/by YUGO 'don't that chafe a might podner?'

So what's that got to do with a 'tailwheel steering lashup'? The tailwheel steering is @/by Cessna, factory spec. If you meant the towing gear, why not say so? [Edit: Had a cup of tea, not fussed anymore.]

Hi Inspector,

that little white (and red bolt) airplane in the background of that picture.... umm... I can't recall what it is. I tried figuring it out using the great power of the internet, but with no luck.

Can anyone out there help us out.

It's a little single seater with externally braced (struts) wings. Ummm... it sort of reminds me of a taylor monoplane, but I know it's not.

I'll keep searching.

Glad to help. I found the below photo online of that Stits. Cute looking little plane.

BTW David, thanks for posting the photos. I had intended on going to the Chilliwack Airshow but just couldn't seem to drag my a$$ out of bed that morning. Good to see the CMF was out in force.

Brian, it would have been great to see you out there. It was really awesome to see the CMF fleet out in force, especially since the year before we had the Tigermoth and Bill Findley's Harvard.

I barely didn't make it. I arrived just in time to see Bud Granley do his snap roll on take-off in the Harvard.

You should makes plans to attend the CMF's members flying day September 13th. Flights available in the Waco AQC, Tigermoth, and Harvard.

There's also going to be an exciting announcement at the event.
