HISTORY TAKES FLIGHT!

The Flying Heritage Collection, one of the world’s great collections of rare World War II-era fighter aircraft opened the doors of a 51,000 sq. ft (4,738 sq.m) hangar to the public on 6th June at Paine Field in Everett, Washington following relocation from a small warehouse near Arlington Airport. The aircraft currently on display feature 15 of the most iconic machines ever designed and built, and several are combat veterans. In this article we take a look at the individual history of these machines and get a preview of some of the 'gems' that will eventually join those already public view.

BLENHEIM BL200 MEMORIAL PROJECT

For many years the only world’s only genuine intact Bristol Blenheim Mk IV ’long nose’ has been in storage at the Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo. Following an extensive restoration this combat veteran, with some 60 missions against both Russian and German forces, has gone on display inside the Central Finnish Air Force Museum. This article looks at the history of the aircraft during war and peace and how a dedicated band of volunteers spent thousands of hours returning BL200 to combat ready condition - a tribute to the country’s bomber crews, mechanics and armourers who served with distinction during Finland’s struggle in World War II.

DESERT DELIGHT!

After a major delay in exiting the United States, Spitfire Tr.IX ‘MH397’ has arrived safely in New Zealand for new owner Doug Brooker of Auckland. The aircraft was shipped to Ardmore based AvSpecs where it received a repaint of the fuselage, it now finished in the Desert colours of New Zealand’s highest scoring ace, Wing Commander Colin Gray (27.5 kills). We take a quick look at the airframe's history and capture the Spitfire where it belongs, with some lovely air to air studies.

P-26 – BOEING’S PILOT PLEASER

The P-26 marked a significant step in the transition of ‘Pursuit’ (fighter) aircraft in the U.S., bridging the gap between the wood and fabric biplane and the low wing all metal monoplane. The P-26 was the first all metal aircraft and the last open cockpit fighter of the U.S. Army Air Corps and went on to be a popular pilot’s aircraft, affectionately known as the ‘Peashooter.' In this look at the fighter we summarize the type's history, take a look at the survivors - original, replica and reproductions- the latter focusing on Tim O'Connor's efforts in recreating these pint sized Pursuits.

THE REMARKABLE H.A.R.S STORY

From the most humble beginnings, this remarkable organization has grown through hard work and smart policy to become one of the world’s significant operators of single and multi engine historic aircraft. Restrained by lack of space for many years, H.A.R.S has now made a move to Albion Park and is at last able to explore its full potential -the first stages of which are nothing short of astounding!
