A year or two ago I did a small oil painting of the SE5a scene below. I sold it, and the plans for a larger version were put on hold until recently - I'm slowly working on the 17" x 24" canvas as time permits.
A bit later, I did this Fw 190 pencil on vellum study for my subsequent
Deelen Wolves oil painting. Notice the very nice frame:
The Fw 190 pencil study above was sold to an overseas buyer, and due to the shipping expense of the large and heavy crate we decided to instead remove the art from the frame and the buyer would frame the piece himself. That left me with a good frame just screaming for
something ...
So, I did this 'retro' pencil study recently as sort of an "in between" project in preparation for the larger color work to follow ... I sized it specifically to fit that nice frame you see above. If it were not for the need to not waste a beautiful frame, this piece may not have come to be:
