Experimental plane crashes into Oxnard building
AP
Posted: 2008-08-10 05:02:54
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - A man is hospitalized after his single-engine experimental plane struck a school bus storage facility in Oxnard.

Authorities say the crash occurred about 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses told them they heard the plane's engine sputter and backfire before it clipped a baseball field's backstop then crashed into the bus barn near the Oxnard Airport.

The plane is believed to be an S-51, a smaller-scale version of the P-51 Mustang used by Allied forces during World War II.

After Saturday's crash, the plane's crumpled body could be seen on the ground separated from its wings, which leaned up against the building.

The pilot was the plane's lone occupant. He was taken to a hospital with serious leg injuries but is expected to recover.

No one else was hurt.

Hope he'll recover fully. A shame that the plane is destroyed, but it's better than a lost life. Best to him on his recovery.

Sure hope the pilot has no permanent issues and heals quickly.

As a side thought, does anyone know what engine this type of experimental uses??

Glad to hear the pilot survived. I just saw that airplane in June at the QB staging in Camarillo. Shame, that was a neat little airplane.
