My friend, Hank Merbler of the Vought Aircraft Heritage Foundation/ Vought Aircraft Industries Retiree Club, passed along these photos taken during a recent Health Fair Open House at Vought Industries in Dallas. They're just about finished with the F4U-4 Corsair and they're still hard at work on the F6U pirate and V-173 Flying Flapjack!

Looks like they got a nice collection down there!

Nice a/c but whomever put the marking on got'em bassackwards. :?
I know-I know, but even if you make a perfect a/c, if the marking are goofy that's the things that hits ya first

Nice to see that they've progressed so far. However, Jack's right about the paint job. The aircraft looks like it has -5 cowlings too... they certainly aren't from a -4! Congratulations to them regardless...

Cheers,
Richard

PS. Any photos of the F6U?

Yeh, that and why does it carry 16 kill flags, post 1947 stars and bars, a way too bright shade of blue over neutral gray undersurfaces(!!??!!) plus great big NAVY logos, does this one go into the 'most inaccurate paint schemes' post too?
Or is it the same kind of deal the MoF has where the sponser gets to pick what markings go on the finished project no matter how out of whack and poorly excuted they are? :vom:

I said the same thing when I first saw these. With all the info and photos in their archives, why the strange paint scheme?
I knew it was a conglomeration of parts, put together to look like an F4U, but the final touches are what people see when they look at it.

The aircraft are restored by the Retirees, but they don't have a "museum" building to display any of them in.
Vought gives them hangar space to do the work, but the general public is not allowed at this time to view them.
Some of the projects will go to the Naval Museum in Pensacola, and the V-173 will eventually be returned to NASM.
I think the 3/4 scale bird was donated to them and I'm sure they probably drag it around to display or in parades, but the full sized Corsair is theirs and it's not goping anywhere soon!

Doesn't the cowling appear to be an AU-1 style? The cowl flaps don't quite seem correct for an AU-1, but the ring cowl looks right. Beautiful looking machine regardless.

Check out their website:

It's a little dated though, that's why I got permission to post the newer photos.

Looks like they grafted F4U-1 cowling on an F4U-4 airframe. Maybe they had to make thier own cowling??
