not exactly off-topic, but I didn't know where else to put it.

Last week I was in British Columbia and Alberta with a group of students on a People to People Student Ambassadors trip. My kids were 10-12 years old and we were a little more than halfway through our two-week trip. There aren't many deviations from our schedule and not a lot of free time, but that's usually okay since our days are filled with a ton of educational activities. While on our way down to the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, we drove through Calgary and headed south. Soon the bus passed a sign that said "Nanton". hmmm...that sounds familiar. Why do I know that name? Then I see a sign that refers to the Lancaster and it all falls into place for me. Except that I was stuck on the tour bus. So there I sat with my face plastered against the window as we drove past the slightly open hangar. I could see the Lancaster inside and the T-33 and CF-100 outside.

I left a smudge mark on the window...

It goes along nicely with my long-standing fear of flying in somewhere only to find out that there is an airshow going on and I am just changing planes and can't stay. Of course, that kind of happened last week in Dayton when that NWA plane made an emergence landing during the show.

I know the feeling all too well. A few years ago, I was on a United Airlines flight that had a connection at Washington-Dulles. It drove me crazy to know that I was literally right there by the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center and couldn't go visit it! I could see the Constellation  sitting on the ramp as we taxiied in to the terminal.

:x :x :x :x :x AARRGGHH!!! :x :x :x :x :x

(and I still haven't gotten to see it)

Something similar happened to me on June 5th 2004. I was touring Normandy on a tour bus. We were done for the day and heading back to our cruise ship. We passed an airport on our way and guess what was parked on the ramp? The BBMF Lanc. Of course I was the only one who seem to have spotted it. I think I left finger prints and a face smudge on the window as well. That was the only time I had a chance to see that Lancaster.
