This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Hi...I have read this site for quite a while and have really enjoyed it. I'm an A&P mechanic and love WW11 airplanes. Well something flew over my house (Hampton, Ga) about 2 weeks ago and I do not know what it was. When I first heard it it sounded like a turbine engine (I hear enough jets at work) but this sounded different so I ran outside but all I got was a quick look. From the back it had the look of a fighter with a low main wing and mid rear wing. After it was about a quarter a mile away I could hear a piston engine barking away. Too me it sounded like a radial engine (I have heard quite a few) but if what I heard was a supercharger whine, he was pushing a lot of boost. The day was really hazy so every thing looked gray, so no color scheme to go by. I am open to suggestions...anybody have one? Thanks.

Hey PB welcome aboard.
Not sure if this is what you heard but I always thought the 109 had a very turbine sounding engine.

Thanks for the welcome....The more I think about it...with the plane and exhaust going away from me it could have been a merlin. I know that last statement did not help but it is driving me nuts about that plane. I saw a video on youtube with a Mustang pushing it pretty hard and it had a lot of supercharger whine...hey could be. I wish I could have seen the front of it...Would not be a question then. Seems like the 109's horizontal sat up a little higher that this, plus I its not like there is any 109's around here, a few Mustangs though. Most likely I will never know.

Thanks for the help anyway and once again I really like this site, I look at it every day!

My first thought was a Bristol Centaurus powered Sea Fury....They have a whine and their own destintive sound.... Just a thought.

Nope, it had a smaller fuse than that. I have never heard a sleeve valve engine run, but I would think that it would have a louder bark than what I heard. Thanks anyways.

something that bothers me about the way you posted the description, a mid rear wing ? Do you mean a horizontal stabilizer ? Your a A&P, and don't even know the correct name for the parts of a aircraft .
a P-47 with turbo sounds different, as does a Bearcat.

Yes I know the correct names to the parts of aircraft. I did not know how many people would be A&P mechanics or experts on aircraft. I did not mean to offend anyone for sure. What I should have said was "mid mounted hortizontal stab" but then the plane was 1/2 mile away from me when I saw it anyways. Seems that most P-47's have there turbochargers disabled so the engine is only using its internal supercharger and the Bearcat does not have a turbo just a supercharger.

The CAF has a P-51 based nearby, and isn't there a P-40 restoration shop down that way too?

Yes the CAF has a P-51 based at Falcon field, but I do not know about the P-40 project. I am close to Bear Creek (or Tara field). I helped out a little with the Dauntless project before the CAF moved to Falcon field, just a small sheet metal repair on the right wing leading edge, someone had done a repair years before and had made the filler with square corners so I had to make the repair bigger so I could radius the corners on the wing skin and the filler. Still lots of fun and the only warbird that I have worked on.

Your on WIX, there are alot of operators, restorers, maintainers, pack rats, and historical experts on here, believe me, they would know what you are talking about.
I just wanted to make sure you were not a mall ninja.
