Dead Airplanes on Popsickle Sticks

I do my Reserve duty at Maxwell AFB and see that T-38 every other week. Yes, it used to sport T-Bird colors, but give me the traditional White Rocket ATC/EATC scheme any day.

Displayed a short distance away are: B-25J, B-52D, F-86, F-100, F-105D, F-4D, and F-101. They all seem to get a fresh coat of paint every 5 years but the airframes won't last forever. Seems like they were painted within the last 6 months, but the clear top coat is peeling on the Century-series birds and they look awful already. :oops:

I hope the gov't got a warranty.

Ken,

It's too bad to hear that the clearcoat on those aircraft is peeling. I was last at Maxwell two years ago and they had just finished the fighters and were well along with painting the B-52. Is the F-86 holding up better since it's not in camouflage?

I just got back from a 12-night Mediterranean cruise, and I managed to find two dead airplanes on sticks for you:

Here is a Dog-nosed Sabre jet mounted on a stick at some airfield outside Rome, Italy. I shot this from about two miles away through the window of a fast-moving tour bus on the motorway, so please don't gripe about the small size or lack of clarity (I cropped out the unnecessary clutter and enlarged the remains to 200%). I was lucky to get off a shot at all! It's interesting to note that the jet is displayed with the landing gear down. It also has drop tanks. I wonder... could this actually be a Fiat GR.91 rather than a Sabre Dog? Did the Italian AF even fly Sabre Dogs?

Here is a Twin Beech mounted on a stick outside the entrance to the airport at Cannes, France. Again, the photo was taken out the window of a speeding tour bus, so it's the best I could do under the circumstances.

Due to the shape of the tail on that plane, I'd put all my money on it being a Fiat.

I agree, it is probably a Fiat.

However, yes, Italy did fly Sabre Dogs. In fact, they also built some.

This F-16 was displayed on a pylon in front of the airline terminal in Medford,Oregon for a couple of years.If the construction in the parking area is ever completed,I believe that this ex-Klamath Falls based machine will be returned to it's display point near the terminal entrance.In the meantime,it's sitting a bit lower at the edge of a general aviation ramp near the tanker base.
