As an add-on to my previous bit on the XC-99, I recall asking at the time when I toured the airplane at Kelly, that one of the main uses in its last few years of operation, was hauling jet engines back from the Far East, (Japan), to Kelly for overhaul, and taking new or overhauled engines, plus whatever else needed to go to Japan, on it's westbound trips.

That's San Diego (Lindbergh Field) with the old Convair plant in the background off the nose. Some of the old plant is still there.

...And during her earlier days...110inch single mains. Saw her in San Antonio a few times...
purchased the obligatory Coke and walked through her...massive bird.

Maybe they can use the XC-99 as the new conference center at the museum

There is stuff everywhere! That is one massive airplane.

Great news to hear she's finally all in Dayton.

I'm curious about how the plane will be restored. Large sections of the original magnesium skin will have to be replaced..I wonder if the NMUSAF will use the original material, or maybe standard aluminum in its place. Natuarally, restoring her to her original condition with original materials is the ideal choice, but is magnesium even available, and if so affordable? For that matter, is the stuff any more difficult to work with than aluminum?
