Latest News on B-17 Sally B

B-17 Sally B will not be flying at the Flying Legends Air show at Duxford on Saturday and Sunday. The latest news from the aircraft repairer is that it will be at least another few weeks before they have an engine ready, so we cannot commit to a date when Sally B will be flying again, but still hope that it will be in July.

Any news on why/how they managed to frag two engines, one right after the other? Who does their engines?

The few who possess real knowledge and can set it into motion of their own hands are the rarest of all.

From what I remember from their latest bulletin (newsletter), it appears that they had two master rod bearing failures. One engine came out of long term (1998?) storage, the other from a U.S. builder. They are not sure why the failures occured, but suspect bearing deteriation while in storage. Probably won't know for sure until they strip the engines down.

They did the changes by-the-book, so I don't see how the failed engine could have contaminated the replacement, which was my first thought.

Disclaimer (which should go without saying): I haven't talked to anyone at B17 Preservation, so this is all Monday morning quarterbacking, (even if it's the wee hours of Tuesday am.)
