I thought that at first, but it's got a straight rudder hinge line. The Ki-46 Dinah has a "kink" for the mass balance.

I'm no expert, but that looks like a Special Attack (Kamikaze) tail marking. I'm leaning towards a Ki-27 Nate. Many were kept around as trainers and hacks in the home islands, and were adapted for the Special Attack role towards the end of the war.

Look closer. There is an offset at the top of the hinge line.

To small for a Dinah. The other photo (above this one) is a Nates Type 97 fighter with open cockpit or the two seat version for training.
Looks like a Kamikaze type mission were they decorate there aircraft before there last mission. Not sure though.

I apologize. I didn't click on the lower link above. I thought we were talking about the Dinah in the color shot.

We Haf WINNAHs!

Steve Nelson came thru with the Ki-27 and Starduster added the Ki-79 family... This was perhaps too easy as the answer is within the URL just above the photo's URL in the initial posting? Congrats to both of you!

Cheers,
David

Where was this unit based? They're not sure whether the research is there in their archive. Perhaps someone may yet complete the study?
Cheers,
David

Get shovel too Steve.
Isn't that the only surviving Dinah?

I'm pretty sure that's the only survivor. She shore is purty! The late-model Ki-46 has got to be one of the most attractive aircraft ever built.

Do ponies eat lawn clippings? I just mowed tonight, and have a pile of them out back.
