Granddaddy's pictures from the war..Nose Art...

Mon Jun 23, 2008 7:34 pm

I went to my tribal and ancestral home in Texas before going up to Olympia for the airshow. Oddly enough, my old friend Gary Austin was on the same airplane as I was from Midland to Dallas! Anyhow, I found these first five pictures in some of my Granddaddy’s stuff.

My aunt had these until recently and nobody else had ever seen them. He was a surgical tech in the 77th infantry. I know these pictures were taken on Ie Shima. I remember him talking about the Japanese arriving to surrender.

These first five pictures have never been seen outside of my family as far as I know, but that doesn't make them rare! In fact, it seems the arrival of the Betty Bombers was pretty well documented!

Good to see you posting again Brad.

That 24 nose art is very elaborate. I'd love to see "Cocktail Hour" in color!

Do you have any shots of the inside of the 24, I'm working with a PB4Y-2 and could use a little help. Great Shots ! I have the DRAGON AND HIS TAIL on the wall at home in color. Thanks -JOE

Great Pic's, I am constantly amazed with the stuff that shows up here! And, let's face it, if those nose arts showed up on a current rendition it would be "Banned in Boston" all over again!--- If my memory serves me the "Japanese Betty Peace flight" landed at Okinawa. Correct?
