It just occured to me that the Navy's comment that there are no B29's left on the lake might be explainedable. What if the Navy, inits infinite wisdom, has decided that the B50 isn't really an upengined B29? This was actually used to justify buying it when 29's were being phased out, right? So whyn't them usin' the very same arg'ment these days?

I never did get BU numbers off the one I saw, but I bet I could...I believe Taigh has photos of it as well, posted on this site...What about it?

AS I recall...

The Navy said they didn't have any Bee-twenny nines because they didn't....

They had targets......

That just happend to be rather large, had 4 engines, were shiny silver (and some black) and conveniently scattered all over an active bombing range, open desert as radar targets or sitting in clusters here and there as spare "targets".

At least that's how it was 'splained to me.

I think this thread was ment to be serious so I'll try and curve it back on corse. I am aware that there are several or were several B-29 hulks on China lake. The B-29 "Doc" was one that somehow managed to escape. I don't really know any details on anything but if there is still B-29's out there even if in bad shape they should be allowed to be saved.

Yes...they should be saved. But. They most likely won't be. It'll take some serious juice to bust one loose. Juice I doubt anybody on this board, no matter how strongly they feel about it, has.

Nobody really knows all the facts except certain Navy types and one or two guys who probably lurk here. Rumors, pontifications and strong gusty vocalizations abound on this subject.....and that's about all they are.

Nathan there absolutely is one. You remember I did a dig there in the Fall of last year? I drove past it every day as we drove to the site from our camp site. And tehre are pics of it on this website somewhere. It's in bad shape, one side smashed, cockpit pretty much gone, and the tail is missing (i think on the other side of the hill due to blast damage) but it IS a 29.

And yeah, it was a semi serious thread. I wonder if in their minds they can justify claiming that there are no 29's because they are in fact not 29's...

What was they Navy designation for the B-29?

Maybe one just has to ask for it in "Navy," to get the correct response?

Navy Designation-

TA-R-G1T (remember- it WAS USAAF... To the Navy, any old, abandoned Navy a/c is redesignated a "WAR GRAVE" empty or not...)
