Are plans still being made this summer to recover the P-38 recently discovered along the British coast?

is proposing that they also recover all the sand around it as they now are certain that Amelia was piloting it. twin tails, twin engine, Lockheed ---you do the math oh and they found the other shoe heel on the beach in wales!

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.

Was it on a beach in Wales or in a beached whale? And, did the crabs lead them to it?

TIGHAR references

I have not heard any recent news about the aircraft being recovered.

Edit Here is TIGHAR's page... All you have to do is send them $ and they'll recover it  http://www.tighar.org/Projects/P38/welshplans.htm

This part seems like it could be true.

Quote:
The result of those meetings was a consensus that the Royal Air Force Museum will move forward with planning to recover the aircraft using military assets. The museum’s intention is to conserve the P-38 at the Michael Beetham Conservation Center at RAF Cosford in the English Midlands and eventually exhibit the aircraft in “as found” condition at the main RAF Museum in London.

How soon the RAF Museum is able to put the necessary conservation preparations in place and organize the recovery remains to be seen.

Okay, I'm busting my self-imposed silence on this one as I'd like a response from somebody in TIGHAR if they see it.

Reading through the "PLANS" page on TIGHAR's website there are a couple of points I would like to address:

1. Fundraising - What exactly is it to be used for?

If the aircraft's recovery is to be planned by the RAF Museum using military assets, this makes it an Ministry of Defence show, and the soldiers on the ground are paid by the MOD. The aircraft is mentioned as being taken to the RAF Museum at Cosford for conservation... again MOD.

2. "if it becomes uncovered before the RAF Museum is ready to begin recovery operations, TIGHAR will help provide security."

In another part of the website you state "If the aircraft becomes exposed again due to changes in the weather, currents, and so on, TIGHAR will be organizing surveillance teams to prevent looting or interference with the artifact."

How exactly is this going to be achieved on a public beach? The only time the Protection of Military Remains Act is regularly enforced is when illegal recoveries take place, it is virtually impossible to stop people going on a wreck. Look at what is left in the hills of the peak district, the Yorkshire moors, the lakes, Scotland and other places. All are subject to the same laws, and entitled to exactly the same protection as the Lightning site.... unfortunately it does not always work.

What defines "interference"? Lots of memebers of the general public don't react well to being told to move off a public area by private individuals (i.e somebody other than the the police....). Saying that, I don't think the police would be best impressed with members of the public getting moved on.

Responses welcomed..... I know you TIGHAR types read this.

Regards

Ric Woods

From the picture on their site, I see a salt water wreck, missing lots of panels (nose, cockpit, engines) and covered with sealife. I give it a week before it turns into dust

It will be flying in 5 years! Thats the easy part, the problem is do you paint it with invasion stripes or not, and do you use the right size rivets in the left nacell.

As the MOD licence holder for this aircraft if anyone has any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer.
