I noticed this aircraft when we took a stroll of Yanks air museum. Can someone tell me what it is.

FJ Fury, Navy version of the F-86

For some reason I've had the impression that the Fury was not very successful in Naval Service.

Wrong impression or.............?

Actually, the FJ-1 preceeded the F-86 by a few months as you can see in the photos it's got straight wings not swept ones (still analyzing that captured German stuff about sweeping the wings back).
The Fury helped. along with the McDonell PHANTOM 1 to usher jet power into the Navys fleet. It was slow because of it's straight wings and had pretty short legs too. One interesting feature on the airframe is it came with a sort of roller skate that attached to the nose gear strut door, the nose gear could be retracted and this little two wheel skate was attatched so the aircraft could be stowed tighter on the hanger deck by pushing the nose of one under the tail of the one in front of it.
The FURY eventually got swept wings and had a pretty long fleet life into the early 60's with the Navy and Marine air.

The original straight winged FJ-1 Fury was not very successful - built in very small numbers with limited service. The swept-winged FJ-2/FJ-3/FJ-4/FJ-4B Furys were built in much larger numbers and saw pretty wide-spread Navy and Marine Corps service during the mid-fifties to early sixties time period.

The FJ-1 Fury is not a Naval version of the F-86. The F-86 is a further development of the very basic design of the FJ-1 Fury. Only thing in common is the nose intake, cockpit above the engine and maybe the landing gear.

This FJ-1 was part of the New England Air Museum's collection for many years before being acquired by today's owner. Admiral Evan Aurand flew this in a Bendix cross country race back in the 1940's and NEAM still has his entire flight suit and gear from that flight.

There aren't many more complete ones. I think only Pensecola has a whole FJ-1.
