For a number of years a good friend and I have participated in a memorial day service at the Independence airport. To our regret the focus of this event has evolved into more of a social gathering with displays and a community BBQ. Last year seeing how things were going when I got up to speak instead of reading the names of the local pilots who had passed away in recent years I read the name and circumstance of every KIA/MIA aviator from Oregon I could find. It took quite a while to read my list and I pissed off a lot of people. Afterwards has everyone rushed off to the BBQ I was approached by a lady who thanked me, shook my hand and then gave me a big hug. It turned out she saw the notice in the paper of the service and came not realizing I would be reading her husbands name!
Now how cool is that?
Here's my list..................................

Good Man Jack....Quite an emotional moment I would think. Needs to be done more often esp. with the young folks. So many of them have no idea what goes on outside their small world....and have no idea of the sacrifices made so they can be safe in that world. Thanks again Jack....

Thank you Jack for letting all of those people there know what Memorial Day is truly about. And to those that may have felt that you spent too much time memorializing the fallen, may they rot in H#LL!

Jack,

That's one of your best posts yet!
Couldn't agree more with your sentiments about the Memorial Day barbecue. That's kind of how I've felt about some events here in San Antonio.

Wow, what struck me about this list is that nearly everyone of the Vietnam era men on that list were MIA and apparently never recovered.

Very humbling and a good reminder of what today is supposed to be about.

Thank you Jack for redirecting all of our thoughts today.

Thank for keeping the focus on what the ay is truly about.

As an addition or sidenote, I had a similar event yesterday. While at home with my wife, 2 young kids, and my mother in law we were enjoying a few steaks on the grill and enjoying our freedom. The news started a run down of all the names of the Marylanders of the armed forces from the current Middle Eastern conflict who made the ultimate sacrifice. I stood and read every single name. As they were slowly rolling by my 4 1/2 year old daughter said to me "Daddy it's not important, it's just the end of a show" to which I quickly snapped back "It IS important!" I then made everyone in the house sit down, shut up, and read every name. After it was done, I sat my daughter down and explained to her why it was important. I don't think she truly got it, but just having lost her grandfather 6 months ago to cancer and knowing how that felt I think it made an impression.
