Sorry, I missed this question earlier...
Yes, there are some interchangable parts between the B-29 & the C-97. However, the B-29/B-24 Squadron has pretty much salvaged what they can from this nose section, before I got it from them. Now, if you have a need for C-97 stuff, I can fix you up with a solution to your problems. :-)

Motorhome body!

My first thought as well. A really kicka$$ Airstream! I think I saw a program on cable that showcased unusual homes and a guy had built a home out in the desert from an old airliner, 707???

Weren't the guys back East with the Berlin Airlift 'strat looking for a cockpit window a couple of months ago?

Too cool! I'd love to have something like that.... There was an article a few years back in Sport Aviation or something like that where an ex C-97 crew dog had bought one from somewhere, had it lifted over his house with a crane to the backyard, and then attached it to his house as an outdoor porch where he'd have his coffee in the mornings! It looked pretty cool!!!

On a serious note - if someone was interested, what is the asking price, and what kind of average cost-per-mile for transportation would it be?

Not sure what kind of price to put on it. I'm one of those types that would rather see it go to a "good home" than make a few extra bucks on it and see it get destroyed, scrapped, or whatever. Transportation costs are whatever you can get a roll-back wrecker for. The reason I chose that, rather than putting it on a trailer, is that the wrecker guys have all the permits already in place for a wide & oversized load. It is too wide for your typical car trailer.

Either way, if you or someone else is interested, simply PM or e-mail me. We'll work something out. Oh, and I'm all about trading too! :-)

I bet I've spoken with the Berlin Airlift folks (great bunch of folks, by the way) a half a dozen times about all of the C-97 stuff here, and they have declined. It's not that they don't want it, but the cost of getting it there and having a place to put it once it's there is their dilemma.

Gary:

Is this the nose section that was off in the dirt/grass a hundred or so yards from the CAF Hangar in Midland?

Did the CAF own it? Were they going to scrap it?

Just curious.

Yes, its the one that was out in the dirt here in Midland. The B-29/B-24 Squadron is who used to own it, but no longer had a use for it, so I obtained it from them. The goal was to get the "hill" cleaned up, and I got the nose BEFORE the possibility of it being scrapped.

Am I over-reacting? Well, there's a PBY in my back yard that WAS on its way to being scrapped, so I think being proactive was the best choice to make, regarding this C-97 nose. :-)
