Warbird Information Exchange

Fox news just showed the crash site of what appears to be a military marked L bird of some type. The report is that a student and his instructor were practicing touch and gos. Somehow they ended up between two tractor trailers backed up to loading docks on a big warehouse. You can see the OD wing with invasion stripes, not much else left after the fire.

What a shame,... prayers go out to them.

It was a Grumman AA-5 (modern version of the Grumman Tiger/Cub) with Hortman aviation.

I know it one of Hortman's Grummans: I am not sure it was their military marked one: It looked like it at first, but later pics I saw looked like it had civilian paint- what was left of it anyway: that was a bad one- not much A/C left. And it was a double fatality, unfortunately. They were surmising last night a departure stall and spin after doing a touch and go, while executing an "at your pleasure" tower requested turn.

Thanks Forgotten Field, I just saw a short blurb on FOX they acted like it had just happened. The link is to the full evening news report, it look to be amazingly accurate for a TV story. Looking at the close up video you can see the square wingtip of the Grumman.

According to the FAA incident database, the a/c in question is an AA-1
which is the two seat Yankee/Lynx version. If you spin one of those even up high, its tough to get out.

I don't like the look of those airplanes. I think the Cub and the BD-5 look like coffins...

I was mistaken in calling the aircraft in question an L bird. The surviving wing was in OD green with invasion stripes. As stated the aircraft that went down was a Grumman AA-1 which has no resemblance to a Cub and certainly none with a BD-5.

Hortman has one(that I know of) painted up to look like a Spitfire with invasion stripes: I don't think it was that one, but I can't be sure.

-I just reviewed the link for channel 6news- I did not know they had two at Hortman with that paint scheme. I know I have seen them during my breaks at school doing touch and goes many times.
