IMHO, there are a bunch of busybodies on this board. Everyone has an opinion (even me), but it won't change anything. I've seen lower (Bob Love), and the FAA doesn't even consider a 60* bank to be an aerobatic maneuver.

Maybe I should clarify my thoughts, it is not so much the straight and level stuff that bothers me as much as when the wingtip is close to the ground.
Maybe I am a wuss but I would rather be able to buy the guy a drink in the bar at night than have to raise glass to his memory.........

There is nothing wuss related to saying that someone is being dangerous and foolish. And that is what this is. I don't care how good you are, this is too low, and the turn that close is foolish. There is no other word for it. I have been flying for 14 years and it might not have been in Tomcats, but it doesn't matter. Whether you are in a Tomcat or a cub that is bad news. You are opening up you chances of having something happen to you. I'd rather be lucky than good anyday.

Mustangdriver,

You can't compare low flying in Cubs to P-51's. Heck, Cubs are made for that kind of flying. You're only going 70 mph in a Cub. Get out in the country with a good Cub pilot and do some 'terrain following'. Thats fun flying, and safe with the proper knowledge of the terrain being followed.

You most certainly can compare the two. It doesn't matter what you are in, a turn that sharp, that low is never a good idea.

So where is the outcry for stopping inverted ribbon cuts during aerobatic displays? Surely that is far more dangerous than a simple 60* banking turn? Didn't Joanne Osterud slide her biplane into the runway inverted during one of those dangerous manuevers? How about snap rolls on takeoff? Where is the disdain for that?

Well, back to my padded room where all risks of injury have been mitigated for me... Just wish I could unfold my arms!

YOu guys can sit here and say, "Oh it will never happen to him", or "He is jsut so awesome that he knows what he is doing". But had he pilled it up, the same people would have been saying how foolsih it was to fly that low, and so on. I have a great deal of respect for the pilot in this, but it doesn't change facts.

There's a difference between a sharp turn and what Snort did. That 'sharp turn' lasted a long time.
I'm not promoting carelessness, just saying low isn't always dangerous, given proper experience and knowledge of the situation. You think your buddy CY ever buzzed anybody?

I am sure he did. Do you think he did it the other day? No. And as far as I know he wasn't in this mustang and has nothing to do with this event.

I just can't look at that photo and say, Oh sure that is just as safe as anything else.

Now let me ask you guys this. Is there any other views of this? Can it just look closer than it is? I know sometimes the lense lies. I have a great deal of respect for this pilot, I just think either it looks closer than it was, or he was sticking his ass out a little more than he needed to.
