This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Respect for older people? Sounds like the John McCain skit on Sat, Nite Live! Seriously, you should respect older people, because before you know it you'll be one, if you live long enough. For a lot of years thought of myself as the new guy in warbirds, probably since I started as a low time pilot with no military flying experience. Then one year I looked around the pilot rom at Oshkosh and said who are all these new guys? I realized after 15 years I wasn't the new guy. I started to feel I knew some things and express opinions more. A few more years went by and I sometimes need glasses to read, no more 20-20 up close. I had 20-10 when I started and kept 20-15 for years. When I began CAF was in Harlingen, there was no Lone Star or Cavanaugh. Lot's of fun, good folks were still alive and flying.
No BS, if I had one big piece of advice for young folks, it would be not to waste time, use it wisely some way, because it will fly by before you know it.
Hoover has had much respect from everyone but his own FAA, but he'd have more from me if he had tried to make some payment to the 28 owner. We don't know all the facts from his side, or the legal points.
Sorry Guys this was meant to go on the Hoover /T-28 topic, I am typing facing the sun and hit the new instead or reply tab. Maybe someone can move it over.

Bill- Why does it take us so long to realize these things?! I am 42, still feel about 16, and have a whole lot of wisdom compared to then. Don't know where it came from, or how I got here so fast, yet so slow...

Respect has nothing to do with age! Otherwise, there woundn't be any to coin the phraise, (Old Fools).

As almost a mantra, when growing up, I was told by teachers, parents and relatives:
Respect your elders. Not because they know more than you, but because age has given them the wisdom that you still have to attain.

Help me out. There are several active threads on this forum which seem to have only one purpose, to diminish, degrade or tarnish a reputation. What the motivation is, I can't understand? Does it elevate the selfesteem of the critic? Envy? Jealousy? We've read all the negative comments on Lindbergh, Yeager, Boyington, Lemay, etc., but what good comes of this? WIXers in general, have displayed respect to the famous and the faceless others who have sacrificed all. The tone of these threads is unbecoming to those we honor and the machines that carried them.

Airnocker, first these people are public figures and not just by accident, they have made their careers public with books, speeches, ads, pr. etc. This topic is not random gossip about someone's private matters. Hoover himself wrote abut this flight in his book. The idea of damage from acro flight in a 28, and the responsibility for it is certainly within the scope of WIX. I began with the idea that maybe one side, the owner's was being taken as FACT and maybe Bob's side was not being considered. I am more of the opinion that, just perhaps, he could have made some payment to help with the damages.
Finally, if you don't like the topics, why not just go to others and leave this to those who do find it interesting.

Bill, I assumed when joining WIX it was for education and entertainment, but it seems I was wrong. Aviation has been the core of my being for the past forty years and and the negative tone presented here has been disheartening. I will take your suggestion to heart. Goodbye.

..and you get to the point where you are too young for Medicare and too old for women to care.
I can honestly say that my Pop taught me everything I know but he didn't teach me everything he knew.

Left me on my own for that.

From time to time threads like this pop up on WIX.
Sometimes there are folks on here who feel a need to take a pot-shot at someone for whatever reason...just like people do in real life.
It's an internet forum. This is standard.

Airknocker, whoever you may be. You may not know or care, but this discussion started with report of and sympathy about a recent Mustang crash. The part about Hoover and the 28 evolved out of that and was made a new topic, a good decision I think. My topic, Respect was intended to go on the Hoover site where someone mentioned respect for elders. McCain just had a funny Sat Note Live bit on the age thing. I hit the wrong tab so it became a topic of its own.

I was going to say that, slowly but surely, I'm getting there, but time seems to keep moving faster and faster the older I get. : )

Getting old does indeed suck at times. First you realise your arms are getting too short to read anything & after that other things start to crap out, mostly ligaments.. Had a "oh, was that light red? moment yesterday. Was ok tho, I was in the middle of the Mojave Desert & probably the only vehicle for 5 miles in any direction.. which made me wonder who the hell decided they need a light there??
Being somewhat newly divorced I decided to try the "half my age plus 7" theory. At 48 that puts me in the market for a 31yo. Seemed to work ok at first.
Then I got carried away & forgot the "plus 7 years" part. My advice on the matter:
NEVER! EVER! forgot the "plus 7 years" part. Took me about 3 bloody days to recover.
Used to be able to sit down & stand up without making any noise, then I started to make noise as I stood up... now I make the same noises when I sit down..
& flashbacks, ever have them? Not all hangars smell the same, similar but not identical. Was inside a Tigercat the other week at Van Nuys & there was *that smell*.... Hangar 2 at Duxford. It took me back 18 years in a heartbeat. Strange thing is, that Tigercat wasn't there when I was, & it's been in the US for months, but it had a distinctive, instantly reconisable, TFC aroma.
Anyone else have more magazines in the bathroom than you have on the coffee table..?
Remember when you used to grab your kids hand to walk them across the street..?
Freaked me out the first time my kid did it to me...
It's all very strange when you have a mind telling you that you're still 21..

Demand my respect and you will never gain it.

It is unfortuante that there are those who wish to tear down Heros, Countrys and insperationional role models. If any time in our history we need positive insperation it is now.. Why we cant accentuate the positive to motivate the collective group? For the most part, Wix is a harmless cornucopia of usless information. Really! However there are some rather tallented people like the inspector, Randy, forgotton field, And gary that motivate and inspire me with their vast knowledge.. I just sold a bunch of aircraft material to a warbird operator/ collector that cringed when I brought up WIX.. From what I understand, someone made some Uneducated remarks about his airplane and expressed disgust whith the board as a medium. Let's try and be a little bit more positve about things and forgo hero / aircraft / bashing for intertainment...
