..and that P-38 WAS painted as YIPPIE just don't recall who owned it at the time. I think the opening photo was @ Bakersfield smokers meet.
Anyone have a photo of the 4 Allison dragster that was built but never run? It was done by the same guy who built 'BIG AL' the chopped 34 Ford sedan with V-1710

So that bird is now what remains of Scatterbrain Kid, eh. I say bring it back as Yippee!

Ok, a couple of more for now

Walt Arfons and his Allison powered Green Monster

I have no clue what this is, but it is a aircraft engine

The follow on to Arfon's Green Monster (built using this same car as a starting point if I recall) used to be at the museum at Talladega. The engineering was eye-opening to say the least.

Walt was an iteresting man. He found an engine out of a F-104 in a scrap yard and took it home to for his car and soon discovered he needed a special tool to work on it so he contacted a buddy in the Air Force who had access to the tool but could not take it off base. So, every night his friend would take it out and slide it under the fence, Walt would get it, go home and work on the engine and then bring it back to the fence in the morning! The engine had been damaged by FOD and he discovered that half of the blades where sorta ok, so he only used every other one in the engine! Yeah, half the blades where left out.

When it came time to test it, he strapped it to a huge oak tree he had in the back yard and fired it up! Yes, his neighbors loved him!

Well, apparently the Air Force found out about it and came looking for the engine because it was still a classified piece that should have never gotten loose, but he told them he bought if fair and square and kept it.

God Bless Walt Arfons

That was Scatterbrain Kid that crashed in Lafayette, LA. Not the Scatterbrain Kid II that crashed in Breckenridge. I'm sure that whatever was left of the first one ( and I don't think there was much ) have long since been incorporated in someone elses P-38 rebuild.

Wow! The shot of Garlits on the carrier brings back memories. I was just a kid when that appeared in Hot Rod (1971, I think). Awesome photos!

Looks like a small Continental, maybe a C-85?

Yeah, that thing is crazy enough to be cool! Hopefully I can find another pic I have of a rail with a rear mounted Ranger engine and a prop!
