I got the following request the other day and was hoping y'all could help...

I received a call the other day from a gentleman who is trying to find some information for a friend on a Spitfire that had a Griffon engine. He has the serial number from a part of the plane-from around the gear housing. The number is RMV508. Underneath it is the letter F, which he says is much larger than the serial number. Now, he is wondering if there is someplace that he can go to find which plane this was a part of. He and his friend want to find the pilot, or the family of the pilot, of this plane to see if he/they want the parts. Do you guys have any suggestions of where I could send him? I think we have lists for US aircraft and parts but British? I don't know. Any help would be appreciated, as always!
Thank you!
Emily

Sounds like a good question for Peter Arnold AKA Mark12. I am pretty sure he could be of help on this subject.

Could I suggest you have the area bearing the serial number photographed and posted.

'Gear housing' is an American term.

For many here in the UK that would be the reduction gear on the front of the engine.

It could also be the area of the undercarriage (alighting gear).

Fair enough, Peter. I'll forward that request to the requester. :)
