The Collings Foundation UH-1E Huey will be flying and giving rides at the Texas State RR, Palestine Depot May 17, 18. This coincides with the railroad's annual Salute to Veterans weekend. Their will be reenactors representing soldiers from the Civil War to Viet Nam. They are setting up a reenactors encampment and vintage military vehicles will be on display. The railroad folks are going to build up a WWII armament train and it will leave the Rusk Depot on Friday morning and will be on display at Palestine throughout the weekend.

Armed Forces Weekend Event
“In Defense of the Homeland”May 17-18, 2008

Join us for the 11th Annual Armed Forces Weekend. There will be living historians, re-enactors, representatives of the various branches of service, static military exhibits and many other living history exhibits to cover a broad spectrum of military history. This event is held to honor the men and women who serve and have served in defense of our country. The highlight of the event will be a special Military Armament Train that will arrive at the Palestine Depot at 10:00am on May 16th with armed military escorts. This train will be transporting World War II vintage military vehicles on flatbed cars. We are told that this is the first time since WWII that this type of train has run on US rail, with the possible exception of movie projects.

Static displays include:

Civilian aviation helicopters & 20MM gun mount from the Battleship Texas.

Living history exhibits include:

1850’s Texas Forts Period, Civil War and Buffalo Soldiers, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, & Present Day Military.

Special Activities You Won’t Want To Miss This Weekend
Small arms demonstrations of various types of weapons used from different periods of military history and mock WWII battles which will be choreographed by the Texas Military Historic Society.

UH-1E Huey Helicopter Rides: Saturday & Sunday take a ride on a helicopter that served in Viet Nam with Marine Squadrons VMO-2 and VMO-6 as a gunship. It suffered minor damage on two occasions from hostile gunfire and was flown in combat by the only Marine helicopter pilot Medal of Honor winner, VMO-6 Captain Stephen Pless. Rides will be sold to individuals on-site by the Collings Foundation, who is providing the helicopter for this event. Co-pilot tickets will be $150.00 and $100 for the six rear seats.

We will start early and run all day, or until we've flown everyone that want to. This applys to the 17 and 18.
