I also like the fact that they mention the ability to pull the circuit breakers for the warning. "Oh I couldn't concentrate over the sound of the warning horns."

Cheers to the Brits for not jumping in and promising swift punishment for the pilot, if it is found that he was negligent. An old saw says the "A mistake proves that someone stopped talking long enough to actually go DO something." Yes, lowering your gear is Pilot 101, but I'm applauding what seems to be a fundamental difference in our two cultures.

Let's say the guy completely forgot to drop his gear. Let's also assume he's been a star pilot and officer in every previous endeavor. Assign him to create a presentation for the RAF on the hazards of landing gear up. Ask him to help the safety community come up with a fool-proof solution to prevent future mishaps. And then send him back to his unit with no permenant trash in his record and get him back in the saddle doing what he was trained to do.

Although I'm sure there are examples to the contrary, we've earned a reputation as a "one mistake Air Force" and they've earned one as being a service with (at least) a piece of the Big Picture.

Ken
