I wonder what the range to target was? What type of missile? Was a helmet sighting system used? What type of UAV? Did the UAV have any type of counter measures available? Why did the UAV pilot just sit there and let the vehicle get blasted? Publicity stunt by the Georgians? I wish I knew more details about the encounter. What if the next Georgian UAV shoots back? Now that would be interesting.

I'm not all that impressed either because a real man, I mean a real Russian fighter pilot would have used his guns!!!!! That's the problem, they still think like Soviet fighter pilots.

If you watch the entire video, they are pretty clear as to what happened. The UAV was flying along the border and the MiG took off, entered Georgian airspace, shotdown the UAV and then flew back to Russia. The UAV pilot probably didn't do anything because at the time he probably had no reason to believe the Russians would really violate their airspace and shoot down the UAV.

My question is, what are the Russians trying to do with the shoot down? Were they trying to hide something or are they getting aggressive and this be a prelude to more open hostility towards Georgia and other former Soviet states.

Taran with a MiG-29, now that really would be something to see!

By the looks of the smoke trail, I'd say the missile was an AA-10A (Vympel R-27 for you non-NATO types out there)

There is talk on other boards that it was actually the Georgians that shot down their own UAV.

The arguments is that the video actually shows an SU-27 Flanker which the Georgians have in their arsenal due to the video showing the missle coming off a wingtip pylon (which the Mig-29 does not have).

Argument 2 is if it was the Russians why would they waste a missle that probably costs more than the UAV when 2 or 3 rounds of 30mm would have done the trick.

No, the missile definitely comes off an outboard pylon, not the wingtip, and it's definitely a MiG-29.

Georgia already has a good case for Russian interference in their internal affairs, they have no reason to try and up the stakes. Add to that the increased Russian activity, especially in the resumption of Bear flights, this is the next logical step for a soon to be former leader who has previously stated his desire to return to the "old days".
