The PB4Y(B-24) (twin tail) is marked on the side of the nose- Looks like it says "Johnsville, Pa." I have the pics set upon my computer so they open up to a full screen- and have pretty good quality for the starting size: I can almost read some of the tail numbers! Would be fun to trace and see if any are still flying!

PS- Glad I wasn't the guy who had to set up ALL THOSE CHAIRS!

I have a picture of my mother and some of her friends standing in front of that station hack and it definitely says Johnsville PA.

I wasn't sure if it was a station hack, or test bed vehicle, based on the (guess) "Bat" missile under each wing. I doubt they just hung them there for the show...

Thanks for the info!

There is a web site I saw not to long ago that featured China Lake operations year by year from 1943 on. There was some pics of Johnsville marked aircraft doing test work at China Lake in 1940s.

Tried your 'link' several times and was VERY specific to use the 'password' and no luck-
I hope someone with better luck can enjoy the pictures. This is one reason why I despise complicated nod and secret handshake link sign-ins , if you can't simplify how to get to something please don't post it- :!: [/i]

No need to run.

Click on the link. In the space marked 'Password' you type (or copy and paste) 'WWIIPics' without the quotes.

It's so easy Tom Cruse can do it in a movie while hanging on a piece of string. Allegedly ;)

Rob,

I just went back and was looking at the pictures again and I have to question the location that you present as Warminster. The original Tower was located on the South East corner of one of the eastern hangars. These would be visible behing the flight line where the stands are set up.

I do not see the hangers or the tower that was built before the one in your pictures. Plus the "New Tower" as it was called by the Brewster workers, wasn't built until the late 50s or early 60s. It also was not as extensive a facility as the one in the background of your pictures. The tree lines look mor like NE Philly also.

I think from looking at the pictures that the site may have been the Northeast Airport in Philly. The former tower that was at Johnsville is now in storage at Willow Grove.

Any suggestions?

When I asked my father about it a few years back, he stated it was Warminster. Also, with the pic you included, if you bring it up enough, you can just read "NAMU JOHNSVILLE" on the tower. It is very distorted, due to the angle. I can only go by what my dad told me- and I looked over Paul Freeman's site (he posted a couple of the pics)
http://www.airfields-freeman.com/PA/Air ... warminster he seems to concur with what I was told If you have a good pic of the PNE tower from the period, where the words on it can be seen, to compare, I'd be happy to look it over, and see if there is a misidentification.

Rob here is a view of the tower at NAS Johnsville from the 60s

Here is one of the old tower just visible over the right wing , it is attached to the corner of the Operations hangar.

Neither is the same as the structure in your picture and the hangars were there before any substitute tower was built.

Also if you look the the picture of the Super Guppy picture on his site. Under the right wing is a clear view of the tower and it shows the elevation and no external structure other than the tower itself.

I know I have some better pictures some where of both and I will try and find them this week.

here is a shot of the original tower at Johnsville from the 1940s when the field was developed by Brewster. It was replaced later by a freestanding one sometime in the 1950s.[/img]
