I found a link to a photo of the Quonset Air Museum's F6F restoration.
Nice to see that it's almost finished.

Also, their TBM Avenger is looking good too!

The photo is of a scale replica of a Hellcat. I saw it on a visit last year and was fooled for a few minutes. The real Hellcat is somewhere that is not accessible to visitors. I don't know what progress they've made, but I think it's still a long way from completion.

Wow!
I didn't look that closely!
I guess that may be one of those "North American" Hellcats we've heard so much about!

So has it actually flown?

Here is an interesting story about the designer/builder:

The canopy looks overscale..almost like they used a real Hellcat canopy. What kind of powerplant is that..R-985?

That TBM looks very nice..is it gonna be a flyer?

It's a 3/4 scale replica built using original plans. It was a 20+ year project. When the person behind the project passed on in his 80's, the plane was donated to QAM (about 2 years ago). The widow wanted it detroyed and his kids think it's worth millions. The engine has been run, but it's never been flown.
The restoration project of the real Hellcat is going along slowly. The person who was the project leader for the restoration recently left the museum, so I don't know what will happen with the project. I'll ask my friends at QAM and post any updated info I receive.

I guess that pilots don't scale real well.

Lycoming R680

Yes... original was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean back in the early nineties. It's very complete, and very well preserved, all things considered.

Cheers,
Richard
