Bill, I understand your point. But; could it not be possible for the base story, i.e. the equipment in a bunker, story to be true, while the subsequent story to be false.

That is someone hearing about the cache and then embellishing it to thier own glorification.

I mean, hey I don't believe in the Loch Ness monster, but; having someone make a papermache monster head and then filming it as they put it in the water is NOT conclusive evidence that the whole thing is a hoax. Just evidence that the specific action in question is a hoax.

As for someone putting it there and knowing about it. Sure they did. And; they could all be dead by now. They could even be the source of the original story.

My Grandmother was a Welder at Mare Island Naval Shipyard before, durring, and after WW2. She used to relate the tale of how on the day before VJ day there 50,000 workers at the shipyard. And; that when work resumed a week after there were less than 5000 workers left. Everyone else had gone home.

The point to this discussion is that when they closed down the yard she was interviewed by the group responsible for cleaning up the base. She led them to site after site of weapons and ammunition that had been burried and dumped around the Island, not to mention typewritters, 50 gallon drums, ect ect.

When I asked why she had never said anything about all the burried material she replied: " Why I thought everyone knew about that old stuff, it was never a secret"

The stuff included a complete battery of AA guns. Look it up. It is part of the official Superfund report detailing the actions taken so far at the base.

By the way they are STILL finding stuff, 12 years after they closed it, and now there is no one still living who was working on the yard in that time frame.

They actually stopped taking notes about dump sites in 96, as they did not have enough money to clean up all the trash they had been told about.

I recall something about an entire armoured division's equipment (tanks, trucks, jeeps, weapons) being buried in Texas at some old closed Army Base. Is there any truth to that story? That might even have come up on this site!

That armoured division was supposedly at Camp Maxey, north of Paris, TX. which is still a National Guard base. The story says the base was gearing up to train the 49th armoured, which never went active during WWII... The equipment had arrived but not the troops when the end of the war came...

Don't know much else, but I do know a Parks and Wildlife guy who discovered that the rock which jammed up the disc his tractor was pulling was actually an unexploded 155mm shell... Made nice hole when EOD blew it up... He was always leary of rocks after that...

In the winter of 1979-1980 I was at Hahn Air Base in West Germany. A TDY to a base in far northern Germany was offered to a bunch of us flightline grunts but I hated the cold and heard it was much worse up there. When the guys came back a couple weeks later they told a story of going by invitation to the "other side" of this German air base, going down a ladder or metal winding stair (as I recall) where a few lights were turned on revealing a cavern with at least a couple of FW-190's. They couldn't go close or take pictures. I know - I should have made good notes about the base name and all other details at the time, but I'm afraid I was negligent. Really regret it today because the witnesses were quite sincere and had no motives and were not thetype to fabricate the story.

Yes I can confirm the validity of this one as I was 2IC of that Dig at Archerfield. I have a couple of each of those types as souvenirs as well as quite a few of the more interesting items we found.

So it looks like the Bundaberg bunkers are officially "debunked." Certainly made for a neat story, and you never know if there might be a scrap of truth somewhere there, but for now it looks like the search is officially coming to an end.

This kinda of reminds me of a rumour from my area. Apparently there is a warplane (supposedly a bomber) that is hidden in the basement of the Seaforth Armouries in Vancouver.

Story goes that when the armouries was built it had a very large morgue. The morgue was underneath the building's parade square and at the end of the war they supposedly created a time capsule from the era including a WWII bomber. Cool story eh?

To add to the suspicion the building includes several doors that have been "bricked over" and the elevator that originally went to the basement no longer has the ability to do so. The layout of the building which is displayed on the emergency fire evacuation signs in the building show the big space under ground.... but when you look around, there's no way of getting down there.... anymore.

Another rumour that goes along with this is that there is a tunnel connecting this armouries with another one in Vancouver called Bessborough armouries. The distance between the two is about a mile.

As an Air Cadet at Bessborough Armouries, I'd often try and find this tunnel, which may or may not have been found. There's a suspicious area that was, for a while, used as a shooting range. The range is in the basement and at the back of it is just a bunch of wood blocks. I get the feeling that behind this wood is the tunnel. If so, the tunnel is about 9 feet from floor to ceiling and about 8 feet wide; big enough for a jeep to go back and forth in.

Anyways, I'm getting off topic now.

hi dave, what are the chances of going and finding out for sure whats in that basement ?? i live in the vancouver area and i would be more than happy to participate in a treasure hunt of sorts! by the way, i spoke to rob at the museum last week about helping out with the hampden. havent heard back from him yet though, but i am still willing to come and assist in whatever way i can. is any work scheduled in the near future? sim.
