Thanks Jack!!! My great uncle, Rad Calkins, flew P-40s out of the Aleutians. I only met him once, but it would be quite interesting to know if he was one of the guys in the photos.

I think you'll find that they do have blue surrounds, just that they're not readily visible on b/w photos due to the tonal similarity to the upper surface OD.

Great shots!

I was going to say, I can see how the perception that the fuselage cockades had no blue surround got started, they really are hard to see or invisible in some pics.

I agree, it would be great to see more P-40's in this scheme.

There was a another P-40K in 11th FS marking that Dick Thurman had but now it's in another half done right "gag" Flying Tiger scheme!

Yeah I think most of us are a little disappointed with that scheme. It definitely should be in her original colors.

At this point, of course, someone needs to point out that while yes, we are nit-picking color schemes, I think I speak for us all when I say that I am just happy enough that someone has spent a small fortune to buy/restore/maintain these aircraft so that others may enjoy them, and yes as a matter of fact it does give them the right to paint them up however they may choose.

And while we may bemoan the fact that they are not in a purely authentic scheme or indeed one that they may have worn in actual combat and/or military service, it does not detract from the expenditures and efforts of the owners, and we mean no disrespect, and again are thankful that these aircraft are around at all.

There, all done, and please feel free to copy and paste this disclaimer every time a discussion about color schemes comes up.
