G'day,

Tulsaboy asked about a museum diorama in another thread, to help in getting info for his museum, to convince people how they can work. Let's post pics here of any Museum Dioramas featuring aircraft, good (and bad) and why they 'work' or don't look good in your opinion.

NB NOT model a/c, full size ones only please! (Also let's just take the 'fly/don't fly' argument as read...)



'Operation Skua' Blackburn Skua Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton, UK.
This was the last remaining Blackburn Skua in the world when recovered by a sub-aqua team. Then, there was no chance of restoring it, so after conservation, it was put on show 'as is' and set up with a simple, yet representative dioramas showing how it was recovered. One day, it may well be rebuilt, but in the meantime it serves to show what a recovered aircraft often looks like, and how they are recovered; two aspects many museum visitors would otherwise be unaware of. Given the limited funding and resources of the museum, this isn't as flash or sophisticated as some displays (and went up in the 80s, IIRC) but in a simple way captures the idea, IMHO.

Here are some from Pensacola showing how many of their a/c look as part of their long term storage/preservation program ...

B-25 41-30792 at the National War and Resistance Museum in Overloon, The Netherlands. This aircraft has been on outside display for more than 40 years in the forest of Overloon: http://www.jetphotos.net/showphotos.php ... h=41-30792

But now it is placed inside, in a nice diorama. The lighting in this museum is horrible, from a photographers point of view.





One interesting fact about this museum is, that is located on an original WWII battleground where lots of pieces of military hardware were left when the war was over, and which formed the humble beginnings of the museum:

In the alcoves around the diorama are alot of the Barons personal items, including one of the original crosses cut from the aircraft after the crash as depicted in the diorama.

I was very impressed with the ones at the US Marine Corps Museum at Quantico. Very realistic figures and lots of effort placed into the surrounding area. But I have to say, those NZ shots are amazing! What a great blend of action and realism!

Hey, thanks JDK! That really helps, and gives a great briefing on what kinds of vision other museums have had for their aircraft. For the backgrounds- has anyone out there seen/used a vinyl "stick-on" application? We've just gotten some for use in two display cases, and are considering doing a huge (about 20' high x 80' long) background on our hangar doors, to at least look more interesting than just plain gray paint. It is really thin, can be printed on with a photo, and sticks to just about any surface. Looks kinda neat.
