Slight clarification to Rich De Boers comments in the article - F Freddie also crashed in Calgary at the airport on that same tour in 1946 killing the crew, the mossie in question was acquired in the early 70's from Spartan air services. The way teh reporter has edited the article leads one to think that the two aircraft are one and the same.

Gord Lowes comments are nonsensical, if it is such a basket case why was someone willing to fork over 1.5 Million?

I agree that Lowes' comments make no sense, the city got it right, find a buyer or get a grant so it can be sent to Nanton where it belongs.

The Calgary Mosquito is not that bad...it is 90% complete (reported to me from someone who has seen it recently and know what he is talking about) and in far better condition than the one that we started with in our museum.

It is all well that the City of Calgary has decided to retain the aircraft, but that is only 1/2 the solution...there needs to be a plan to restore both aircraft and get them on public display.

I do hope both the City of Calgary and the Aerospace Museum take the time to work out a long term plan to assist the museum AND restore these very important Canadian Aircraft.

I do hope this works out for the best.

CITY HALL MEETING: THANKS to members Bob O'Connor, Peter Cromer and Roy Riddle for coming out to support and to speak. It was a very long day. Ultimately the committee of city council moved to direct administration to work with the Aero Space Museum to complete the public consultation process and to develop a suite of options for the restoration of the Hurricane and Mosquito and to report back to committee no later than Nov. 2009.

All immediate prospects for a sale are dead.

It was pointed out to the committee that if you ask a fox what should be done with chickens, that all you could expect to get back were recipes. In other words, the committee adopted our recommendation that other, independant, organizations be a formal part of this consultation process as the museum has tried to sell the Mosquito three times in the past six years and could therefore hardly be counted on to come up with a fair and objective list of options for the airplane.

The museum was represented by Steve Ogle and Clark Seaborn, neither of whom addressed the committee. (Nor did they offer to buy me lunch).

We took a couple of minutes to do some serious flag waving to the committe about the new kids in town: the CALGARY MOSQUITO SOCIETY, its goals, successes and support to date, and we will be providing the names of individuals and organizations to be included in this process. If you have ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

BIG THANKS to Alderman Connelly for taking the bull by the horns to modify the motions to reflect our concerns. Also an overdue THANKS to Aldermen Mar, Pincott, McIver and Farrell for their previous votes of support. These are the good guys and gals on council as regards this issue and our goals.

What it means is that we, the CMS, have time to get our ducks in a row and present a strong and compelling plan to see that the Mossie is retained and restored here. YEA!

ON A RELATED, BUT ODD NOTE, several members advised me of an article in the November issue of the Kirby News (a monthly bulletin directed at seniors in Calgary) wherein Aero Space CEO Steve Ogle was interviewed about the Mosquito. The writer gushes about the glory of the Mosquito. Where the story takes a bit of an odd turn is when Ogle is quoted as saying "yes, let's do whatever we can to get it out of storage and put it out in public so that people can see it and enjoy it." Mr. Ogle is further quoted as saying that "Its going to take a while, but evnetually the Msoquito will be restored." Though he doesn't say where or by whom. The writer concludes by saying that "Once restored, the Mosquito will go on display at the Aero Space Museum." Certainly this is a new and odd tune for the museum to be playing. Can we trust it?

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS, re our society and its goals. Two invites so far, with one firm date at the Red Deer Flying Club on Nov 17, thanks to an invite by member Bert Lougheed. Hoping to firm up a date with the Calgary Vintage Sports Car Club yet as well.

Things are looking promising. Too bad she won't be a flyer, but I love the fact that she'll be restored to Spartan specifications.
