This is sad. We are seeing a first class aviation museum basically selling off what made them famous. Very sad indeed. Where are you going to go other than Pensacola and see all of the grumman cats parked together? Have fun trying to see that Tigercat when it is in someone's private hangar, and they don't wish to let you in.

Sad?

Sad is when a machine that was designed to fly does nothing but collect dust or pigeon poop.

Yea it is sad that all the cats wont be together but that doesn't mean somebody with money will come along and snatch up these fighters and hide them away. I agree with you mustangdriver that its important to have static and flyable museums, BUT I will always welcome another bird back to the skies.

I think it can be a good thing. I had the same feelings when LSFM let go of the A-20, P-38 & Wildcat. Even though they didnt belong to the museum I knew that instead of sitting in the museum they have a good chance of returning to the air. Maybe they will find a new home were people in that region haven seen that type of aircraft before...Who knows! :D

This is the greatest news ever and in no way sad at all. Warbirds dont deserve the fatal fate of being grounded and to rot away. The whole insurance excuse was stupid and everyone knew it. Someone will put the airplanes back in the air where they belong. I hope they sell everything.

I dont know of the greatest news ever there Chuck, I have a few other things I would put up there. This is a rather close 3rd maybe.

At first I thought Tiger, and I read it again. Whew! That could make 2nd for me.

Seing a CF Swallow would tie that.

Greatest news ever would be something like Ryan offering to let Rob move in with him in Arizonie!

OK, OK, I was just jumping to extremes to make a point. I actually dont care that much but would love to see that collection fly again with them or anyone else.
Does CF stand for cute female?
Have you asked Ryan how he feels about a roomie?

[quote="Trey Carroll"]This museum isn't about the Grumman 'Cats. The Bear and Tiger are awesome airplanes, but their role in U.S. Naval Aviation is rather slim, as compared to the Hellcat, Corsair, ect.

Really? How can we say that when the star attraction at the museum is Grumman Cat family. They also used to fly the Grumman cat flight at shows. They were famous for that.

And chuck, Have you ever been there? These aircraft were hardly rotting away.

I think the time of mourning and sadness was a few years ago when the musuem stopped flight ops at the request of the lawyers and then trapped several aircraft in the new hanger so that they would be hard pressed to ever get out, much less fly again. I really felt sad when I saw their P47 essentialy built into a large scale model diorama and most of the kids in the building were more interested in the carnival rides on the other end of the hanger.

I think this is a good thing - as Elroy says- maybe a chance to get them back in the air in an area lacking for warbirs (Maryland pherhaps  ). Considering that a few years ago they auctioned off there inventory of spares for the Cats there doesn't seem to be much of a chance they would ever fly again at there present location.

As far as a "group of Cats" being displayed somewhere, I would really only care about two places to see such a static display, Long Island and Pensacola.
Any other "Cat" display could be manufactured at will with flying examples owned by individuals.

Looks like a beautiful example, I'm sure it'll go to a good home.

Any more info on the "STC Approved Spar Reinforcement Strap"?

cheers

Yes. Star attraction of the museum? That'd be an opinion. Either way you cut it, the museum is doing the right thing, getting these fighters back in the air where they belong.

I have been there, yes they are very well taken care of, but I would rather see them flying. Who is to say that if the F7F goes up for sale, someone like a Mike Brown type might by it. He flies that thing all over the place, and races it.

You make a good point about the old Grumman cat flights. Key word, OLD, get them back in the air!!

No, flying these aircraft is what made the AIR Zoo famous! If it was not for the airshows they flew in, the general public never would have known or cared about them. Now that their collection is static, how much magazine coverage/publicity do they get? Essentially none!
