They are certain it's not the Northrop Ascender and think it has a Russian look, but have no clue beyond that. I don't either, so I put it before the WIX Brain Trust.

Quite the interesting machine you've found there. Very intreging.
My two cents would say it has some kind of italian heritage, maybe. I get the feeling that the plane isn't Russian because of it's smooth lines.
Strangly, when I look at the propeller it reminds me of a spitfire.
So, after all those pennies I have no clue. I'll just sit here and wait for the right answer to come out of the woodwork.

Good eye DMac, it's an Italian bird. The Ambrosini S.S.4 which was built in 1939..tested and
crashed in 1941 due to engine failure. The 960hp Isotta-Fraschini Asso XI R.C.40 engine gave it a top
speed of 355mph. Armament was one 30mm and two 20mm cannon mounted in the nose.
I like Ambrosini's pocket fighters, trainers, and postwar GT birds. Sleek Italian birds generaly similar
to some of the French Caudrons. The pic posted is one of the 3 examples provided in
Jonathan Thompsons, "Italian Civil and Military Aircraft, 1930-1945".

Tho.. just a general ID. I've had Thompson's book since I was 12yo and considered it gospel.
After answering your question..I googled the S.S.4 and found some controversy throughout
the web...I'm quite flumoxed over some of it. Some of it is definitely wrong..and
some I'm not so sure??
Thompson said she 1st flew in '39 and lasted till '41..others say she 1st flew in '39 and
crashed on her 2nd flight the next day due to aileron flutter...
I dunno!!!
